I have a non visa question

Ok so I just deposited a bit of money in my Bank of Bangkok account only to find out it's been frozen. They are asking for a swift verification from my bank in America or embassy... I have not a clue what that is or what to do. Don't even understand why they need anything from my American bank. Any help would be appreciated...thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reports their Bank of Bangkok account was frozen after depositing money, and the bank is requesting a SWIFT verification from their American bank. Community responses suggest providing the necessary verification requested by the bank, explaining the purpose of SWIFT codes in international banking, and recommending obtaining the SWIFT code from the American bank to resolve the issue.

I think it’s pretty easy to get your ‘swift code’ from your bank.

Then give that to them & smile

Simply ask your american bank, they will know.

Its a “postcode” adress, for transfers between banks.

Often you can see it in online bank if you have.

Google can help a lot

But the deposit went ok or was it refused?

You can find the swift code in your app or bank book or call your bank. It uses letters

To define the country the bank and your account for traceability

The reason for all these problems is because a lot of shady transactions they want to know where the money is coming from not saying you but say your selling drugs in Thailand they want to know where it came from

@Bob *********
Why is it the banks business where your money comes from. I thought a bank was a place you put money in , earn a bit of interest , take it out when you want to . Should be crimes commission or police if it appears shady. Me thinks it's more about world order and control.

@James *******
maybe in fairytale land, but not in the real world do you have any idea how much illegal money is laundered through foreign banks. if you did, you would understand their concern.
James ********
@Wayne *******
Who is " their " ?....... Big banks only interested in profits .

@James *******
Australian banks are doing it too!

@James *******
well there’s this thing called money laundering and that’s what’s caused this banking debacle so as long as I’ve been here you’ve always had to prove where your money came from if asked,now on another note you can bring all you want into Dubai,now if you could do what your asking about half of all the dirty dollars would be here
James ********
@Bob *********
And why would that matter ?
Bob **********
@James *******
Do you really have to ask that question
James ********
@Bob *********
I get back to my original post. Banks are there to accept deposits from depositors. When did it change to " where did this money come from ? "
Pierre **********
@James *******
, ....so you won't accept 'money laundering' as the answer?
James ********
@Pierre *********
No , sorry . The people doing the " big " money laundering are way way ahead of a bank teller in bangkok doing audits of hard working citizens. Surely you are aware of that ?

Regulations.

In Europe you can’t put cash of
*****
euro in your account without official documents where it is from.

You can’t send money outside the country on weekends because there is nobody to check if this is legit.

The banks would gladly take whatever you give them.

A other example.

Until recently we (Swiss) had a “bank secret”, no one could ask anything about a persons accounts if they didn’t ask about a certain transfer from or to a certain account validated by a judge. And then came the USA. Since then every single movement on an account of a foreigner must be copied to his country’s government: automatic information exchange!

From your us bank get the statement showing the transaction to show the source

The reason is that they know Bangkok Bank staff scammers. They don't trust each other.

Yes, the USA banking system uses SWIFT. Here’s a clear explanation of what SWIFT is and how it fits into the U.S. banking system:

✅ What is SWIFT?

SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication.

It’s a global messaging network that banks and other financial institutions use to securely send and receive information (such as payment instructions) across borders.

• Founded: 1973

• Headquarters: Belgium

• Members: Over 11,000 institutions in 200+ countries

🔍 What SWIFT Does (and Does NOT Do)

SWIFT DOES SWIFT DOES NOT

Sends secure payment instructions between banks Move money or hold funds

Provides standardized formats for financial messages Act as a bank or settlement service

Supports global cross-border payments Charge or collect interest

🏦 How the USA Uses SWIFT

U.S. banks use SWIFT primarily for international wire transfers. Here’s how:

1. Customer Request: You ask your U.S. bank to send money to a bank in another country.

2. SWIFT Message: The U.S. bank sends a SWIFT message (usually a MT103 for payments) to the receiving bank with instructions.

3. Funds Settlement: Actual money is moved via correspondent banks or central bank systems, based on the SWIFT instructions.

💡 Example:

Sending $10,000 from Bank of America to a bank in Germany — the transaction uses the SWIFT network to tell the German bank when and how to credit the recipient.

🧩 Related U.S. Systems (for comparison)

• Fedwire: Real-time gross settlement system used within the U.S. for domestic large-value transfers.

• CHIPS: Private clearing house for large domestic and international USD transactions.

• ACH: Low-cost batch processing system for domestic direct deposits, bill payments, etc.

🔐 Why SWIFT Matters

• Secure and reliable

• Standardized format across countries

• Critical for global trade and finance

Let me know if you want a simple diagram or real-world example of a SWIFT transaction.

credit unions use proxy swift and only have ABA. Can be a huge problem for international transfer.

Send a Swift wire transfer from your US Bank or ask them for some kind of verification.

Just provide what they ask for.....
