What should I do after my DTV application was denied due to a name mismatch?

DTV was denied, I'm so sad. In the US, it takes 14 days and $400. They said I spelled my name wrong and didn't match my documents. My middle name has a "-" in it, and it was not included on the passport page. I let their automated passport reader fill out the text fields. I should have double-checked. Any way I have to be out of my house in the US by August 1st. So I was thinking of just flying to Hanoi and getting it there. I also have a wife and 3 kids I have to account for. My main question is, do you think the Thai government might think this is suspicious?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user experienced denial of their DTV application due to a name mismatch caused by not including a hyphen in their middle name, leading to concerns about potential scrutiny from Thai officials if they reapply. They are considering traveling to Hanoi for the reapplication due to an August deadline to move from the U.S. The community advises checking application details carefully, and that reapplying from Hanoi is a common practice, with previous applicants sharing successful reapplication stories after similar rejections.

Even better go for a holiday in Danang city, central Vietnam. A beautiful beach city that’s much nicer to stay with a family than Hanoi. You apply online anyway so it doesn’t matter where in Vietnam you are situated. Sorry to hear about the rejection. I’m sure you will get there. Some really unhelpful stupid comments on this page. Good luck!

One thing that I was not clear about is that they ask you where you are staying. How would I know that if I have not decided yet? My wife has a cousin in Phuket and we plan on staying there for a while but only after we arrive in Bangkok and stay for a week or 2. So what would be best to list at where I am staying in Thailand?

Dude I got denied because I didn't put a "-" between my 2 middle names. It's $400 at the LA consulate. Long story short, yeah I am perhaps overthinking this but want to be sure.

Read Tod Daniel's answers carefully. He's the one that gave you good advice. You still have plenty of time. Apply for your visa at least, and depending on how long it will take to get it, consider applying for your family there as well.

Yes, losing 400$ is not fun, but it's just a stupid mistake, should not make you think that you're blacklisted forever. You are not, They will welcome your application as long as you meet the requirements.

The travel information part of the form is not that relevant. Just make something up, or say the truth. Give an address for the first month, even without a booking, and you'll be fine.

In most Thailand Embassy websites, it is very strongly emphasised, that errors in passport informations will lead to rejection of the application.

Write the informations EXACTLY as in the machinereadable field at the bottom of the picture page.

READ thoroughly the website of the Embassy you will apply at, before applying

It is absolutely no guarantee you can stay 5 years, it is also depending on your job or soft power activity.

For moving to a country I would like to have a more permanent visa, not depending on a soft power activity, which is expensive, or on a job contract with remote working possibilities. Especially with a whole family that seems to be quite a risk you take.

What if they make checks more strict an you have to show you have

I had a middle initial instead of my full middle name so rejected because it didn't match. I reapplied 10 minutes after I was rejected and was approved no issues just an expensive mistake on my part.

I would reapply now, you have plenty of time. Many people get rejected for not double checking, then successfully get the visa the next time they applied at the same consulate. By having your dtv now, you can do the dependants application sooner or in August when you travel. Good luck and have a second person check your application before submitting

Sorry to hear about your case.. must be frustrating, especially with such a small detail causing the rejection.

If it's not convenient to remain in the U.S. for the process, applying from Hanoi is definitely a reasonable alternative. It's very common for applicants who are rejected in one country to try again from another and get approved successfully.. as long as the rest of your documents and financial requirements are in order.

Wishing you all the best for the next attempt!

he does not need 2.5 million Thai baht to get his whole family approved for the DTV visa. Once he has his DTV Visa...he can sponsor EACH family member with his 500,000 Thai baht...in the USA they are requiring US $16,000 .

Are you sure about that? Why should it be checked then for dependants when the first applicant already showed the 500K.

As far as I can see each applicant needs 500K, some embassies don't ask for children.

But even if the embassy does not ask, immigration might ask at any moment, so if you don't want any risk to get stopped at entry, you just need to have it.

I have said what I believe is correct. Suggest you ask the Thai Embassy or Consulate where you will be applying for the DTV visa and dependent DTV visas. Good Luck 🍀

What I meant to say is that some embassies might be tolerant on this, but even when you get approved without 500K for each, immigration in Thailand might not be that tolerant.

there's NO check of the 500k in funds upon arrival into Thailand. IF you do Border Runs, each 180 days, again no check yet on funds. IF you seek to extend the DTV visa in your local Thai Immigration office, Ask them for their requirements. Likely easier to do a BORDER BOUNCE each 180 days.

normally no checks for 500K at border, but it can happen and there are a few stories. And when they see 1 DTV with 4 dependants they might get the idea to check for 2.5M if they have a bad day and want to show their bosses they do a good job.

Agreed, there's lots of what ifs possible. BUT right now the border bounce is best to obtain the DTV extension of 180 days.
Like

Luit *****************
For now I agree, especially because immigration offices do not have much routine with DTV extensions.

When they get more routine and you fully comply with the visa requirements the in country extension might be cheaper and easier.

for dependents you don’t need 500,000 each

But asking for 4 dependent visas seems maybe questionable

If workcation maybe they say less

Well, all I can say is you're not alone 🙁

Many MANY hundreds of people the world over have gotten their DTV's rejected because the MRZ on their passport when they scanned it didn't auto fill correctly on the application and they never checked the data entry carefully before submitting the application 😮

Some re-applied the second they found out they were rejected and ended up getting approved no problem

What's the "fly to Hanoi and re-apply"? why do that? It's just middle of June, if you're not leaving until Aug 1st apply again right now, CHECK the data carefully before you submit the application. You'll get the DTV issued in plenty of time

Thanks for the info and yeah it is an expensive lesson. I have 4 other people in my family who still need to get theirs as me as a sponsor after I get mine.. I want to get out of my lease by the end of July so I don't have to pay rent in August. Just a lot going on between figuring out what to do with all our stuff and the move in general. The move has a ton of logistics, especially with a family of 5. I thought if we had to, we could go to Vietnam first and apply there and at the same time enjoy that country for a little it.

DTV is not avis meant to live in the country, that just brings uncertainty. I know visa meant to stay in Thailand also do not guarantee a permant stay.

I do not have objections when people want to try to use a visa different, but I wonder if they realize the risks.
