TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shared their experience of returning to Thailand without a re-entry permit, resulting in the loss of their visa extension. They were given a 30-day visa upon arrival. Community responses indicated that without a re-entry permit, the user's extension is void, and they must restart the visa application process. Suggestions included visiting the local immigration office for guidance on converting to a NON-O visa or applying for a new retirement visa (O-A) from their home country. Emphasis was placed on the importance of understanding visa regulations and acquiring the necessary permits in advance.

Trev I am sorry you were not aware of the need for the reentry permit when you left Thailand for a week and returned. As others have correctly replied, your Extension of Stay to January 2020 was lost when you departed without a reentry permit in your passport.
You now need to contact your local Thai Immigration office and get their direction and requirements to obtain new retirement requirements for your permission to stay.
If you have an oa retirement visa leave just before it runs out come back in get an extra 12 mths which is single entry each time you leave in next 12 months you have to get a re-entry visa
sorry tod i was meaning from the get go , started with an oa visa then got the 12mths extension then left without the reentry visa hence loosing the extension
They do NOT have an O-A visa, they had a year extension of stay from the immigration office and they neglected to buy a re-entry permit before they left the country which canceled their current extension :/
That's the reason they got stamped in for 30 days on a visa exempt entry.
I came back into Thailand from the UK with a new passport only to find I could not accompany my gf to Vientiane until my old passport stamps were transferred into the new passport, even I presented the old passport as well. There are many ways to catch a cold in the land of Smiles.
Even 2 hours can be tight if first flight is delayed ,which happens a lot in DUB .I have missed connections in AUH or else i have made the flight but my bag did not!
And it is all the fault of Immigration, as they stamp in your passport the Extension of Stay and just underneath the warning: To keep your stay permit valid a re-entry permit must be made before leaving Thailand. But who read a stamp inside the passport, i agree, nobody it seems. Laos Immigration was very surprised I did not leave the booth and opened up to check the entry stamp and date first. He said, it is good it is for 30 days and I replied I check first, but I see now, thanks.
Things do get confusing sometimes and i still believe a lot of it is down to wrong terminology. To the OP.....you were stopped for not having a re entry permit (not visa). Also your visa was not cancelled, your extension of stay was.
Your choice is to go to your immigration office and see if they can do an in country conversion from the 30 day visa exempt entry stamp to a 90 day Non-O visa.
Keep in mind not every office can do it AND that all offices that can do it require you to have between 21 and 15 days left on your current stamp to do it. (because the application goes under consideration for between 14 and 21 days before you go back to get the Non-O and a new 90 day stamp inked into your passport).
If you can do it in country but the current 30 day stamp you're on doesn't have enough time left you can always get a 30 day extension for 1900baht and then apply.
I am afraid you will need to start all over. Without a reentry permit, your permission/extension to stay expired. Go to your local immigration office and ask for a list of requirements for your conversion of current exempt entry to O and Extension of Stay.
I’m not an expert but I think you may have to start the process over. Your extension was voided if you left the country and did NOT have a re entry permit.
Ask Todd the process of converting a 30 day exemption over to a extension based on retirement. May need to convert to NonO first then convert to the extension. There are processes but need to do fast so you have the days available. You might make a visit to Laos to get a tourist or Non O visa and allow it to be converted. Don’t need to return to UK but do follow the rules.
