Another one . My US passport expires 20 June 2020 . Retirement renewal due 23 Dec 2019 and . Would it be better for me to get a new passport this fall when I am in the US, so the new visa goes in the new passport. And would there be problems at the airport in Sept when I arrive. Because the Visa and multiple re entry permits are in the old cancelled passport. What's the best way to handle this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the best way to manage the renewal of their US passport while living in Thailand, particularly regarding their expiring passport and related visa arrangements. Okay you have TWO choices;

Do nothing here; stamp out on your old passport, get a new passport while you're in the US and then return to thailand showing BOTH passports when you stamp in. <- the immigration office at the airport MIGHT or might not move your current extension and re-entry permit to the new passport (they don't have to though) OR they might just stamp you in on the new one and tell you to go to the immigration office and get the stamps transferred there.

OR

You can get a new passport here in thailand from the US consulate, take both passports and the letter from the consulate that you got a new passport to the immigration office, get the extension stamp and re-entry permit transferred to the new passport and then exit the country using only the new passport.

That's the only two ways it can work.. Personally I'd say get the new passport HERE in thailand, transfer the stamps at the immigration office and THEN exit the country on the new passport so you're not screwing around with two passports when you stamp into the country AND you're not wondering if the people at passport control at the airport are going to move your extension & re-entry permit stamps when you show up with both passports stamping in..

I had until August on my extension but since I went home for Songkhran I got a new passport in the States and got an O-A in LA so I’m good for almost two years just another option

I had a good system going for years. I would mail everything to Portland a few weeks before zi was finished fishing in Alaska. Return address Seattle. When I got back either had single or double 60 day tourist. Depending if spring or fall trip. Did a Visa run in the middle. Then Portland stopped doing multiples and now walk in only. LA wants to see return ticket . That's was not practical. We never know we are done till we fly out of Dutch harbour. Portland didn't need a ticket. This was the main reason I changed to retirement with multi re entry

But coming back on the old one in September. No problem at the airport with 2 passports. Go to the embassy after the airport, set the ball rolling. Then when the new one is ready come back to BKK and move the stamps over

I am saying get the new one HERE in thailand before you leave, then go get the stamps transferred at the immigration office BEFORE you leave then fly out on the new passpsort.

Yes I did the extra pages in BKK before. Went Ok .
@Tod ********
I go back to the US in a few weeks . You mean get the new one before I leave? I think is takes a week or two to issue the new one that may be a problem to schedule

@Barry ******
, you are incorrect :O they discontinued adding pages to US passports back on Jan 1st 2016..

After the 52 is full there. You must be able to add extra pages surely. Some folk would fill that up in the first year. I saw a US passport that was 2 inches thick. Concert violinist

there are no extra pages anymore. There are two SIZES of passports (one with 28 pages and one with 52 pages) and when you apply overseas for a US passport you get the larger passport for the same price as the smaller one. (in the US you pay more for the one with more pages)
Tod *********
I would say, get the new passport here BEFORE you travel, go to the immigration office and transfer your valid stamps and re-entry permit then exit /re-enter on the new passport
Tod *********
It's faster and cheaper I believe to get the new US passport here in thailand (you get the passport with more pages for the same price as the one with less pages when you apply overseas)

Yes that's why the Visa needs to go in the new one as the old one would only have 7 months left on it

Yes the other possibility would be to get the new passport in Bangkok at the US embassy after I arrive . But it probably would mean 2 trips to Bangkok. Well the first one could be done when I arrive

Okay, the way it works IS

If your passport expires within the year that your next extension will be you will ONLY get an extension valid until the passport expires..NOT for the full year..
