TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about renewing a one-year retirement extension for their visa while their passport only has 10 months of validity left. Responses indicate that the extension duration will only be granted until the passport expiration date, meaning they would only receive a 10-month extension. Several comments suggest renewing the passport as a priority to secure the full one-year extension, and advise checking specific regulations based on the user's home country.

When you make the decision to renew your passport you should consider which month of the year you want your extension application to fall as it may be more convenient for future years if you had a 10 month extension this time and maximise the use of your current passport

They will only extend your visa for the 10 months left

We don’t know what country you’re from but if you’re from USA, for example you can get a new passport in two weeks. Good luck

US passport can be renewed up to one year before expiration. So it depends on your passport issuing country for renewal before getting your visa.

You need to renew your passport. When I applied for my nonO visa, I had only 6 months left on my passport. I printed out the passport application and submitted it to the US embassy in Bangkok. It took about 5 weeks to receive it. I was tourist entry with no visa immigration gave me a 90 day stamp so that I could get things in order. Not much of a problem.

When there are 5 and a half months left, remake the new passport and then apply for the new one-year visa

Depends on passport if you can renew it asap…then renew the extension. Otherwise you get the day passport expires for extension. You should always renew passport before the 6 month mark.

You can apply for a new extension of stay but it will only be granted up to the expiry date of your passport so you will lose the remainder of the 12 months

You will only get an extension for as long as your passport is valid.

Ask your immigration.
