Had a retirement visa last year multi entry, then extention valid until Nov 2018 and had no problems, then I left the country and on return was told at the airport I only get a 30 day tourist stamp, is this correct? Do I now need to get a new retirement visa? TIA.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user initially had a retirement visa with a multi-entry option and an extension valid until November 2018. After leaving Thailand and re-entering, they were issued only a 30-day tourist stamp because they did not obtain a re-entry permit before departing. This change means that the retirement visa extension has been canceled. In this case, the user must reapply for a 90-day Non-O visa, which can be done either from a Thai consulate outside the country or at the immigration office in Thailand, followed by a yearly extension of stay application.

Check the stamps they put in your passport, first thing if the date is correct and read the stamp to avoid things like this. Last two lines of the stamp are important:

yes 5555 wish id read that and understood it a week ago!!! I thought because my original 1 year was multi entry that it would not be an issue. oh well, time to start again. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Or you could go out of the country and get a 90 day Non-O visa from a thai consulate nearby and then apply for the year once you get back in thailand.

Great stuff, thanks again Tod. As David mentioned above, this info is great for first timers and all info on this forum is well appreciated I'm sure, by all members.

correct (y) and if you're using banked money you need a new bank letter and to update your bank book on the day you apply. In bangkok and chiang mai you can apply for the extension when you have 45 days or less left on your current stamp other offices let you do it when you have 30 days or less. You don't lose any days by going early they ADD the year extension to your current stamps expiration date

For the yearly extension of stay, will I require all the same paperwork I used to get the 90 day non O?

It's working good so far.

I was told when going out of bkk last time they only do the single re entry stamps at desk 2 / area 2..

So you have to make sure that you go up stairs in the right area.

Just for others information..

yep that's how it works BUT no one gets the 90 day Non-O and the year extension at the same time :/ (unless they use an agent to grease the wheels of progress :O )

You apply for the 90 day Non-O,

you wait two weeks,

you go back and get it stamped int your passport,

you wait another 2 months

you go back and apply for the yearly extension of stay

then you get the re-entry permit.

IF after you get the 90 day Non-O (while your waiting for the time you can apply for the yearly extension) you need to leave the country you must buy a re-entry permit (which will be good ONLY for that 90 day stamp you got when you got the Non-O visa)

It's confusing for the first timers like me.

I always stand and look before leaving the desk area.

Mine went from TR to 90 days O.

Then 90 days O to plus retirement extension.

The retirement extension gives me until March 2019.

Effectively 3 months plus 12 months.

Then the multiple re entry permit was added to this...

I know the stamping filled two pages.

But I always check it...

The first time going out I actually asked at the desk if it was all done right.

They were very nice about it.

Would hate to start again after only six months usage.

Ok thanks. I just remember when I had my retirement visa I paid a couple of hundred baht at immigration to allow multi entry.

Colin Okay, you can't convert anything, Visas and extensions you get inside the country are sold without any re-entry permit because you're already here.

IF you need to leave the country during the 90 days you can get a single or a multiple re-entry permit after you get your Non-O and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport.

Remember though this re-entry permit will only be valid for 90 days (the amount of time you're stamped in for).

Once you get your yearly extension of stay you will need to get another re-entry permit that will last for the entire year.

Hi Tod Daniels followed your advice, thanks, and will pick up my 90 day non-O tomorrow, just another question, can i convert this 90 day into a multi entry as I may have to leave again before the 90 days are up. TIA.
Tod *********
You would have to apply for a 90 day Non-O visa at the immigration office, wait the "under consideration" period (14 days) go back get the new Non-O visa and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport, then wait until you had 30 days or less left on that to apply for a yearly extension.

Unfortunately, as
@Thierry *******
, said you got a yearly extension BUT neglected to get a re-entry permit after you got the extension, so when you stamped out of the country you canceled that extension and will have to start all over from scratch.
Thierry ********
Yes correct you forgot to get re entry

ok thanks guys, quickest, easiest and cheapest option now i'm back, apply again for retirement or go for a marriage visa?
Tod *********
@Co***
, Once you get a yearly extension you buy a re-entry permit to keep the extension 'alive'. Either at the immigration office just after you got your extension or at the airport before you flew out.

Didnt forget, just didnt know, How would I have gotten the re-entry?
