Visa Question:

I’m American, arrived on 30-day Visa-exemption, and have already extended at immigration one time for 30 days — until February 24th

I need to stay in Thailand until February 27th or 28th. What do you guys recommend?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat currently on a 30-day visa exemption, extended for another 30 days until February 24, is seeking advice on options to stay in Thailand until February 27 or 28. Community members recommend a border run to acquire a fresh visa exemption upon re-entry, cautioning against overstaying due to the potential fines and longer-term consequences. While some suggest simply paying the overstay fine, there are concerns about how it might affect future visa applications and entries into other countries.

Just overstay pay fine and hope they never let you back in Thailand

Border bounce overstay is never a good idea

I bet he posts this again in a few days hoping he will get a different answer.

Do the visa run. An overstay stands out in your passport like a fart stain on a wedding dress.

in actuality, nobody cares. Pay your fine and life goes on. The stamp is meaningless

In Thailand perhaps no one cares other than Elite membership requirements. However there’s been posts here about people applying for visas for other countries that have been rejected because of an overstay stamp from Thailand in their passports. I recall comments from Russia, Vietnam and Singapore where people have had issues.

totally agree with you and appreciate your subject matter expertise here for sure. It’s great. Thx 🙏

Obviously everyone optimally plays precisely by the rules and there are no issues. I simply want to point out that the ‘dire’ consequences that are sometimes portrayed here are not a strong reflection of the reality. When in doubt, stay within the overstay lines. And when you step over them, there are definite consequences. This page does a great job of helping people recognize those.

And Thailand loves its tourists and revenue. Which is great. Do a tourist who makes a mistake or has circumstances… will pay the fine and carry on. And good point about Elite visa applicants

nothing is meaningless in the Thai immigration rules. Past performances influences future plans. A clean immigration record means you come under less scrutiny. Aquire enough overstay stamps and you're likly to get and undesirable alien stamp on your next exit.

This is factually incorrect. Thai immigration does not care one bit about overstay.

really?

Overstay less than 90 Days = 500 Thai baht/day overstay fine (maximum 20,000 Thai baht)

Overstay more than 90 Days = 1 year ban from Thailand and 20,000 Thai baht overstay fine

Overstay more than 1 Year = 3 years ban from Thailand and 20,000 Thai baht overstay fine

Overstay more than 3 Years = 5 years ban from Thailand and 20,000 baht overstay fine

Overstay more than 5 Years = 10 years ban from Thailand and 20,000 baht overstay fine

Everyone know that, but this isn't the topic discussed. The topic is about you wrongly stating that "an overstay stands out in your passport like a fart stain on a wedding dress". This is what I called "factually incorrect", because it is.

there is really nothing to suggest this is true except speculation. The fines for overstay are clear and well published. People with many overstays (me included) suffer zero consequences post paying the well deserved fine. One has 'done their time' so to speak. One would have to commit a LOT of carnage to earn and undesirable alien stamp

You asked this in another group.

Go to immigration and apply for an extension , you will be denied and given a 7 day extension to leave the country.

Or just overstay and pay the fine when you leave, simple.

My hotel is saying their TM30 is online. Can I use an online TM30 to request a visa extension?

To be fair in the other group a mod said to do this and then shut down other people’s opinions from being aired.

The 7 day denial of extension stamp can usually be got at most immigration offices but the stamp physically says “extension of stay denied”. Is that a stamp you’d want in your passport? No issue with getting back in to Thailand but what about if you were to apply to another country for a visa. Russia or somewhere. There’s been some posts on here that people have been denied entry or visas to other countries because of an overstay stamp in Thailand. I could imagine they’d take possibly the same view of an extension denied stamp.

A simple border bounce will give them the extra days they need. They can do it same day or take a few days to visit a nearby country. Then no “questionable” denial stamp in their passport and an opportunity to visit somewhere else.

You can do visa run in Cambodia or book your ticket and stay for one day there and comeback for another 30 days visa exemption. Or you can pay 500 per day Os at the airport when you are going back home.

Pop somewhere cool for a weekend. Siam riap, luang prabang KL etc etc wherevers got cheap flights. Then get the 30 day when come back

You already asked this in another group.

Do a border hop. Don't plan to overstay. There's no reason to have an overstay stamp in your passport if you can avoid it.

Plus, if you get unlucky while on overstay, if you're stopped by a cop or immigration officer for a spot check (which happened to me at an airport - I was *not* on overstay so I was good), you can get not only fined, but banned from Thailand for five years - even if you have only one or two days overstay.
