TLDR : Answer Summary
To extend your stay in Thailand for an additional 30 days after initially arriving on a visa exemption, you can apply for an extension at the immigration office when you have 30 days or less remaining. Major immigration offices may have specific application windows, so check local regulations. After the extension, you can opt for a border run to re-enter Thailand and receive another 30-day stamp. Alternatively, applying for a 60-day tourist visa may be more convenient and economical for a longer stay, as it also simplifies the requirement for onward travel tickets.

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visaexcempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

No need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

no need of onward ticket (90 days 1 onward) if return ticket within 60 days...what does this mean please?

You need to have a ticket out of Thailand in each visaperiod.

So if you do visa excempt 30 days + 30 day extension on immigration you need 2 onward tickets.

If you do 60 day touristvisa you need 1 onward ticket ( typical the returnticket )

If you do 90 ( 60 + 30 day ) day touristvisa + extension, you need 2 onward tickets

Or do a second extension after your 1st border run. Be cheaper and quicker. Just make sure you get a new TM30 after your border run

Yep. Get your extension during the last week of your 30 day stamp. Do 2 land border runs on your last day of your extension and first border run. Easy done

Most immigration offices allow you apply for an extension when you have 30 days or less left which means you can apply as soon as you arrive with visa exempt.

Jomtien immigration and Koh Samui immigration only allow you to apply during your last week.

With a US passport you can leave and return and get a new 30 day stamp and apply for another 30 day extension.
