Visa help. Trying to organise a visa for my mum who is flying back to Thailand to see family. She is an AUS citizen and will be over their for a period of 63 days? What visa will she need? Everything I have read you can only get an extension for up to 60 days is that right?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian citizen seeking to visit Thailand for 63 days should apply for a tourist visa, typically valid for 60 days, with the option to extend for an additional 30 days at an immigration office. Alternatives like the Non-O visa for those over 50 might offer longer stays but require specific documentation. It’s advised to book flights that coincide with the visa duration to avoid complications. If she holds Thai citizenship, she may consider renewing her Thai passport instead, enabling a potential longer stay without a visa.

yes she is Thai. She is looking to get her Thai passport done again when she is there as it has expired. Is she able to get the 1 year visa from the same place?

Here is the link to the embassy web site. That will be much easier than trying to use immigration in Bkk. My wife had an issue just recently and had to get a new ID card, and subsequently a new passport. It took an hour at the town hall where she is registered in our sons House registration Register, and then 30 minutes in the local passport office, and the new passport was delivered 10am next morning. Tell her to fill in the form on the above link, and post it in with al the documentation. She should know where she is registered in Thailand, and as insurance get someone to take a good photo of her name in the house registration book and send it down. Thailand uses a common number on her birth registration, passport and ID card. Its a really simple system

Just get a 60 day single entry tourist visa then extend for 30 days once shes in thailand. Simple process. The only issue being youll need to show a ticket at check in to show youre leaving thailand within 60 days so just buy a cheap Air Asia Flight to Kuala Lumpar and bin it

Is she Thai, even if she is using an Aussie passport she can get a 1 year visa from Immigration in BKK. If not Thai, disregard my post

Those last 3 days is going to be expensive mistake.

Since on top of the 1900 Baht extension fee, you also need an onward ticket out of Thailand within the 60 day.

And use most of a day to find, go to, and wait at a Immigration office.

If staying with family, remember the house owner, has to make a TM30 report within 24 hours of arrival, and since you are asking on your mothers behalf, she might not be comfortable doing it by herself.

The time at Immigration depends on the office. I have extended in Aranyaprathet a couple of times and I'm back in my car in 20 to 25 minutes.

But that is because you know the drill, but for a elderly lady, who has her daughter, to manage visa for her, it can be much more complicated and timeconsuming, alone to get transportation to and from the immigration, can be time robber.

Check Thai Embassy or Consulate in nearest capital city in Australia to check what suits your Mum best.

You need to apply for a tourist visa through the Thai embassy in Canberra that will give you 60 days, then just before the 60 days are up you go to immigration with passport and passport photo copy of passport and copy of your 60 day visa plus 1900 baht.

Post off your visa application about month before you depart sent it registered post you send your passport a photo a bank statement and a registered post envelope with your address on so they can post it back and a money order for $60

Just type in thai embassy Canberra into google

Why not make it 60

Days or 59 as the first day count as day 1 get a tourist visa and no spending one of those extra days at immigration

@Bob *********
exactly I see so many people getting 61, 62 days. or with visa exempt booking 32, 33 days etc. just book at 60 or 30.

Just done this for my mum. Non O visa for 90 days… documents required but no insurance needed this time…
Jeffrey ************
Just get her a 60 day tourist visa and extend it by 30 days when in Thailand.

If she's going to Thailand for 63 days then get a tourist visa which offers 60 days, and can be extended once for an additional 30 days at an immigration office.

Or a non-O visa based on being over 50 which will give 90 days and require proof of funds and possibly proof of insurance.

Thanks for that. The non-O visa what option is that on the visa application form? The non immigrant single entry? With the proof of funds is that thai funds or just a screen shot of her bank?

@Crystal *********
non immigrant yes, based on being over 50 or "retirement" and the funds would be the funds in her own bank.
