Brian Farrell asked

I'm a wee bit confused about the visa I need.

I have an OZ passport and live in Bali and planning to check out Thailand for two months to see if it would suit me better.

Should I just get a 30 day free entry on arrival and extend it in Thailand for another 30 days?

Have I got that right?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian passport holder living in Bali can enter Thailand under two visa options: 1) Applying for a single entry tourist visa which provides 60 days entry plus a potential 30-day extension, or 2) Entering on a free visa exempt entry stamp for 30 days that can also be extended for an additional 30 days at an immigration office. It's important to maintain proof of onward travel as some airlines may require this for visa-exempt entry.

You can. You will get a visa-exempt stamp in your passport that can be extended another 30 days for 1900 baht cash and a passport photo.

You got two choices, you slog on over to the thai consulate in Jakarta and BUY a single entry tourist visa from them which will stamp you in for 60 days when you arrive and which you can extend one time for 30 days at the immigration office

OR

You come in on a free 30 day entry stamp (called a visa exempt entry) and take the one 30 day extension you're allowed on that at the immigration office after you're here

Either way will work out,

Definitely CHECK with your air carrier though because some carriers (especially ones here in S/E Asia) require you to have proof of onward travel within the days you'll be stamped in for if you're comin' in free entry (so in your case you'd need to show you're leaving in 30 days no matter what you want to do after you're here)

is there no longer a consulate in Bali? I went to one near Sanur but that was pre-Covid.

There is a consulate in Bali but they no longer deal with foreigners. They are there to assist Thai nationals only.
