What are a retired Australian couples options for staying in Thailand for around 6 weeks for a holiday, can you enter on a 30 day visa free exemption, and then apply for an extension, or is it better to get a 60 day visa from Australia before entering?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A retired Australian couple planning a 6-week holiday in Thailand has two main options: entering on a 30-day visa-exempt entry and then applying for a 30-day extension for a total of 60 days, or obtaining a 60-day tourist visa from Australia for 1,000 Baht before their trip. Many community members suggest that the latter option is more straightforward as it avoids the hassle of immigration procedures during their stay. Additionally, it can often be cheaper than extending a visa upon arrival.

Thanks to all who replied, going to use the 30 day visa exempt entry and then extend for 30 days here in Thailand. Far cheaper than a multiple entry tourist visa in Australia

What I learned is if staying more than 30 days... Buy the Tourist visa for 1000 baht.. Because if you enter for free on a 30 day visa exempt, you need to pay 1900 Baht to extend your stay fo a total of 60 days.... so it makes sense to just get the 60 day tourist visa for only 1000 baht!

My Mum is flying in to Thailand for 2 days, then we fly out for a week in the middle east, then back to THailand for 5 weeks

The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is only available to apply for in your home country. and it is only valid for use within 6 months after its issued. How long will you be away from Thailand after your 6 weeks stay? and when you return how long do you plan on staying?

No you need to get the tourist visa in your passport before you arrive in Thailand. If your already in Thailand then you just get the 30 day free, but instead of spending 1900 baht to extend that for only 30 days... I would recommend to use that money to travel to a border country like Malaysia or Laos and the 1000 baht to apply for Tourist visa at Thai embassy there and come back for an additional 60 days.

And you can get this on arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport? Can you buy a multiple entry, as we will be heading overseas then back to Thailand

Get a Tourist Visa in Australia, save the hassles of immigration. Then they have flexibility if they want to extend!

Arrive and use Visa Exempt Entry for 30 days and pay 1.900 Thb for an Extension of Stay or apply for Single Entry Tourist Visa for 60 days before departure, cost of Visa 1.000 Thb.

Sounds like the easiest and most affordable option, multi entry tourist visas are not cheap to buy in Oz😄

60 Day so you can completely avoid immigration while you are here 😁

But you can also enter on a 30 day exemption stamp and then apply for a 30 days extension.
