Hello,

Can someone please let me know what is the maximum stay, an Australian citizen can stay in Thailand before requiring a tourist visa and also what is the approximate cost for a tourist visa and is there much involved obtaining one if done from Australia. Also what is the approximate time frame to obtain a tourist visa. Also if your partner is Thai does that have any bearing at all?

Thank you in advance, just planning December/January trip.

Cheers

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian citizen can stay in Thailand for a maximum of 30 days without a visa through visa exemption. If a longer stay is needed, they can obtain a tourist visa which generally costs around $275 AUD for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) or $55 AUD for a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV). The tourist visa can usually be obtained by applying in person at a Thai consulate, typically within 3 business days. If they are married to a Thai national, they may also consider applying for a non-immigrant visa. It's possible to extend the stay further by applying for a 30-day extension at a local immigration office for a fee of approximately 1900 Thai Baht.

Simple arrive on a visa exempt, 30 days stay, then 30 day extension at the local immigration office, cost 1900 bhat

@Robert ******
agreed, I did it my way as I wasn't sure if I would stay, now 1 year later 😂
Robert *******
Spend depending on where you are, a half day at Immigration, 1.900 Thb or send papers for Tourist Visa to the Thai Consulate in home country and recieve it back home by mail, cost of visa 1.000 Thb. What is easy is every body's own choice, but I like to spend my holiday time on another way than sitting at Immigration.

I was looking at possibly just over one month but I’m still sorting that out for the moment. I just wanted to find out valuable information from others that have already done what I’m thinking of doing. I appreciate everyone’s advice and time to reply to my post

@Robert ******
cheers mate that sounds good
Ellie *******
And fee for SETV is cheaper than fee for extension inside Thailand, too.
Robert *******
If you want to stay over a month, best option is to get the Single Entry Tourist Visa before making your way to Thailand. This visa gives you 60 days of stay and if you like to stay longer it can be extended with another 30 days.
Robert *******
If you come into Thailand without any visa the maximum you can stay is 30 days. If you want to stay longer you can apply for an Extension of Stay or leave the country and come back. If you like advice about the best option for your stay, please inform Us how long you like to visit Thailand.

Regarding your query about tourist visa cost in Australia it looks like you could be up for up to $275:

I was at the Brisbane consulate this April and the same fees applied.

@Mark *******
Thanks Mate, I assume the Brisbane consulate would be similar. But having lived for 6 years in Thailand, possibly not.

Get a 3 month tourist visa in Oz, if you apply in person in a Thai consulate with all relevant documentation, you can pickup your visa in 3 business days
Carl ***********
Then you can extend for 30days in Thailand for 1900bhat
Ellie *******
And if you are legally married to Thai national and can meet the requirements you can also apply non immigrant visa type o (thai national spouse), but nothing regarding to tourist visa.

Please know what you are talking about if your gonna try and help. The correct answer is 60 days. 30 days when you arrive and you can extend 30 days in Thailand.
Squid ****
Might? I have extended over 30 tr visa and visa exemptions in the last 10 years. Nit picking. The question was how long can they stay without a visa, and the correct answer is 60 days, like I said.
Jacco ***********
Not really, no matter what you say, they receive a 30 day stamp on arrival without a visa and a 60 day stamp with a visa, that you MIGHT be able to extend such an entry with a further 30 days, does not suddenly change the stamp you will be getting. If one is wanting to stay for longer than 30 days, getting a TV is better, and probably cheaper as well. 1000 baht versus 1900 baht.

Actually the 15 days at land borders is also 30 days. The validity of 6 months is no longer valid either.
Dave ********
Yes Paul is correct.
Paul *******
Wayne Connolly It is now 30 days for land and air arrivals into Thailand. This can be extended for a further 30 days at immigration for (I think) 1,900 Thai Baht.
