I have my retirement visa. I am going to travel out of Thailand for the first time. Do I need to do anything special at the airport before I travel so I can re-enter Thailand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are traveling out of Thailand with a retirement visa, you need to ensure that you have a re-entry permit unless your visa is a multiple entry type. It's crucial to check the status of your visa; if it's a standard Non O visa, you'll likely require a re-entry permit, which can be obtained from local immigration offices or at the airport before departure. The Non O-A one year visa is an exception, as it generally allows multiple re-entries.

If you still have a visa, you’ll need to check if it’s a multiple entries visa as Graham already mentioned. A regular 90 days Non O visa is rarely issued as a multiple at date. If you leave you’ll probably need a re-entry permit. A Non O-A one year visa is always multiple.
If you’re already on your first year Extension of Stay, you’ll need to by a re-entry permit. They’re sold as single or multiple re-entry permits at your local immigration or

at the airport short time after you pass through immigration.
There’s still people in Thailand on a regular 90 Non O days with multiple entries within a year, and it has been issued as alternative also on the Non O. Very popular with people who didn’t want to put money in a thai bank and just take a trip and re-enter and get another 90 days. However with the new e-visa system the multiple entries for a Non O is removed as an option, but without the evisa system it still can be an option.

Yes, get a re-entry permit if your Visa is not multi-entry or you lose your status when you stamp out
