Hi there

This week I am going to extend my retirement visa for another year. At present my visa is multiple entry. I am using an agent and they have said it is more expensive to get a multi entry visa so won't add this option. My question is when I leave Thailand next month on my new visa is there anything I need to immigration wise ? Do I need a permit or anything prior to going to the airport?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When you extend your retirement visa, you do not need to apply for a new visa if you want to leave Thailand. However, you will need a re-entry permit if you wish to return after leaving. You can obtain this permit at your immigration office or at the airport right before departure. The costs are 1000 baht for a single re-entry permit or 3800 baht for a multiple re-entry permit at the immigration office, and slightly higher fees apply at the airport.

You are not applying for any visa, you are applying for an extension. If you want to leave after receiving your extension you need to get a re-entry permit.

You can get this at your immigration office or at the airport on your way out.

At the immigration office it is 1000 baht for a single re-entry permit or 3800 baht for a multiple re-entry permit.

At the airport it is 1200 baht for single and 4000 baht for multiple.

Yes, this it the correct answer, so basically it is up to your plans. Simple math = if you only plan to leave/return one time vs. several trips. Myself, I have always gotten the multi-entry stamp at immigration.
