What should I know about re-entry permits after receiving a one year extension based on retirement in Thailand?

I'm applying for a one year extension based on Retirement next month. My visa is Non immigrant O-A multiple entry.

I'm good to go with the requirements.

My question is what can I do with the one year extension once granted? Let's say during the extension validity I need to take a trip to Australia for a month. Should I buy a re- entry before leaving Thailand? Does leaving Thailand impact the extension?

It should be obvious I haven't a clue. All comments appreciated. Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a one year extension based on a Non-Immigrant O-A visa, you must obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand to maintain the validity of your extension. You can choose between a single re-entry permit for 1,000 THB or a multiple re-entry permit for 3,800 THB. If you use a single re-entry permit, you can purchase additional single permits as needed. However, consider the limited space in your passport as each permit occupies half a page.

James Le Sage - did you use the 2nd available year of the O-A Visa activated by exiting and reentering Thailand just before the 1st. year expiry date?

Okay

No Joe, I realize thats possible. Is just too much of a hassle for me and expense to do a border bounce.

Nope, you can buy as many Single Entry Permits as you need. There is only the option for Multiple if you know to leave more frequent.

The only problem is they each take up half a page in your passport. This may be a consideration if you have limited pages left.

Robert Lagas thankyou. As a matter of interest if I purchased a single re-entry permit for 1000thb used it then later needed to do another trip out of Thailand am I able to purchase another 1000thb single re-entry permit? Or am I obliged to purchase the multiple re-entry permit for 3800thb even if the likelihood of more than two departures from Thailand is remote?

As soon as you have the Extension of Stay stamped in your passport you can apply for a Single re-entry permit for 1.000 Thb or Multiple re-entry permit for 3.800 Thb. This re-entry permit stays vailid till the last day of you Admitted to Stay date. On return they will stamp the same date as your Extension of Stay date in your passport.

Once you are on an Extension of Stay you will need a re-entry permit before you leave for your extension to remain valid when you return.
