Do I need to cancel my Non-B visa if my work permit has been canceled due to my return home?

Doe's anyone know anything about Non B visa's & work permits? Unfortunately I had to cut my work permit short in January as I need to return home for a few months due to a back injury, I informed my office and was given a BOI work permit cancellation letter which states the day that I left work and the day that I need to leave the country.

I was told I didn't need to do anything else apart from leave the country on or before the date stated in the letter. I'm now hearing that I should have gone to the Labour office and cancelled my Non-B visa before I left the country as it can cause complications when returning or trying to find work again.

Will I have any problems when returning or do you think I'll be fine?

Any help will be highly appreciated :)

Note: I actually went to immigration to get some advice about this and they didn’t have a clue.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on the implications of leaving Thailand without canceling their Non-B visa after their work permit was cut short due to a health issue. They received a BOI work permit cancellation letter and were told they only needed to leave the country by the indicated date. However, there is concern regarding whether canceling the Non-B visa at the Labour office is necessary to avoid complications upon returning to Thailand or seeking future employment.

Did you have a non B visa as in the sticker in your passport placed there from an embassy overseas, or did you have an extension of stay stamp from an immigration office in Thailand?

Hi Stuart, it was done at immigration.

ok, then it needed to have been cancelled before you left. As to what the ramifications of that because it wasn’t I don’t know. You’ll have to try immigration again and see what they say.

Ok. It looks like what you may be faced with is an overstay fine because you didn’t cancel the extension of stay. It’s not a ban-able offence just a slap on the face for being naughty. Max would be 20,000 baht.

Thanks for getting back to me, I'll contact the Embassy in London to see what they say, appreciate the help :)

I very much doubt the embassy in London will have a notion. Embassies and immigration are different government departments and rarely communicate. Give it a go for sure but my guess is they’ll just say something like “I don’t know - ask in Thailand”

Hi Staurt, I had a feeling I might be slapped with an over stay, I did mention this to boarder control in Suvarnabhumi when leaving but they didn't seem to have a clue! I was told that cause it's a BOI work permit I only need to leave on the day stated but if it's a normal work permit I'd have to go down the route of cancelling the Non - B visa, but after reading up online it seems that this applies to BOI also. I wouldn't normally be bothered but I'd be looking to apply for a permit again once I return, so the last thing I want is any hiccups down the road.

Yeah I'm not sure if the embassy will help but it's always worth a try I suppose :)

Hi. No idea if BOI makes a difference. My guess no, but if I hear different I’ll let you know.

Thanks, appreciate it 🙏

You’re also adding in to the mix of the labour department which is another government department as well. I’ll ask around to see what others have experienced from doing the same and get back to you.
