Do I need to cancel my work visa if my work permit expires soon while leaving Thailand?

Hi guys!

Looking for some visa advice, I’ve recently resigned and will be leaving Thailand. My Non-B expires in November but my work permit expires in 2 days (10th). I’m planning to leave Thailand on the morning of the 11th and won’t be returning for a while.

Do I need to go cancel my work visa even though my work permit is expiring soon? If my work permit is expiring in 2 days would that cancel my visa as well? I’m a bit lost, any advice is greatly appreciated!🥹

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is seeking advice on whether they need to cancel their work visa since their work permit expires shortly before they plan to leave Thailand. Several comments clarify the distinction between a work permit and a visa, suggesting that the poster likely has an extension of stay and needs to cancel it properly at the immigration office to avoid future complications. One commenter expresses a similar situation, raising concerns about the cancellation process and potential issues when applying for a visa in another country.

I feel like I'm in a very similar situation to this, and after reading the responses am so confused! My school told me that they would cancel my work permit and my non-imm B visa on the 15th July and that I would have 7 days after this to leave the country. They didn't mention giving me any paperwork as evidence of this. I was planning on leaving on the 15th to vietnam and getting a tourist visa from the thai embassy to return to thailand a few days later.... I'm so worried that I'll turn up at the embassy in vietnam and discover that there's a problem with me returning to thailand...

Im guessing you're on an extension of stay and not a visa, check your passport. The the work permit and extension of stay are yours so you should cancel them yourself. The easiest way to do this is to get a letter from the school giving your last day of work and cancel in advance. Then leave on the day. Your school may have an arrangement with immigration I suppose but they would need to have your passport in their possession or they couldn't cancel anything and couldn't get you a 7 day stamp either.

I'd just add that if you are on an extension of stay and have already stopped working you should have cancelled it on the day you stopped so may currently be on overstay

You're mixing up your work permit (which only let's you work here) with your current extension (which lets you stay here)

I'm also doubtful you're on any Non-B visa 😮 and sounds much more likely you're on an extension of stay (read your current stamp)

If that's the case you need to get the termination of employment documentation from your employer, go to the immigration office that issued your extension, cancel it, and IF you can't leave right then you can buy a 7 day "get out of thailand" stamp so you can leave within 7 days.

Remember just letting your work permit run out and leaving the country, OR just stamping out of thailand doesn't officially cancel your current extension 😮

If you're ever gonna get a new visa/extension inside the country not having canceled this extension before you go will come back to bite you

My advice cancel it the correct way at the immigration office that issued the extension before you leave to 'close the loop' on the extension you have
