Got my first dtv stamp today from BKK airport.

Process pretty simple from Vancouver, Canada. My proof of work was just a freelancer website certificate of earnings. Cost was 650$ CAD (~17K BAHT).

Immigration officer actually had to call another one over during the stamping process as she hadn't seen one before. Asked me if I was working (said yes, online). Asked me how long I was planning on staying, I had to book a flight out for visa requirements so used that date 63 days out.

As far as I know, just have to leave for one day and can come back on the same visa, right? Until expiry? And can extend it once for 10k baht? So I'll just have to keep showing this e-visa for 5 years?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post describes the author's personal experience obtaining a DTV visa at Bangkok airport after applying from Canada. The process involved proof of income as a freelancer and payment of around 17,000 baht. They received a 180-day entry stamp and were informed about the possibility of extending their stay for another 180 days or exiting and re-entering for a new stamp. Several comments discuss related questions about visa requirements, potential extensions, proof of funds, and the need for a booked outbound flight.

Please contact any of the moderators to re-open this post if you want to ask anything related to the original post, with information on which embassy/consulate you are going to apply through and for what category of visa.

Please check before commenting. Whatever you ask, and whatever OP would kindly answers, Unless you are applying for exactly the same category through the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Vancouver, that information could be irrelevant to your next application.

If you want to ask about DTV at different locations or different categories even through Chicago, comment on the active DTV post by Tod Daniels, not here.

Why did you need a ticket out in 63 days?

Thought you could stay for 180 days

@Darren *******
you can but e visa required ticked ticket. Just arbitrary

I do not see it written that an extension costs 10k baht but there is debate on that depending on who reads the same document. When I read it, it says 10k visa fee. No where does it say anything about the extension cost but who knows at this point. No one has gotten an extension yet so let's see what happens in real life.

Meanwhile, every time you enter you should get 180 days.

Did you have to show 500k? Or was the letter enough?

had to show proof of funds yes. I used my retirement savings in Canada

Seems like a good visa for younger people. Wish this was available before I got my Thailand elite visa. Much cheaper deal…

Did you really need to book a flight out to get the visa? Most visas have a requirement "confirmed flight booking" without specification whether it's inbound, outbound, or both. But there seems some level of consensus among embassies that tourist visas require both, and anything longer requires only in. Do you think it's possible that only inbound flights were required?

in vancouver e visa section it was a required doc to get an outbound flight. Could have tried submitting without I suppose

Why were you charged 17k for the visa? I thought the visa was only supposed to cost 10k?
Tod *********
@Ashleigh ***********
consulates set their own prices, it's 400 USD in the us (and in phnom Penh too) it's 340USD in Vietnam,

@Tod ********
And THB 10,000 in Vientiane? Any reports of successful DTV applications there? (Any South Africans?) Thanks!
Andi ***********
@Henk ********
I think reports of success from Vientiane will come soon going by the interest in going there. I may go Sept to apply there.

Hello is that certificate good for the next you you will renew?
Tod *********
@Marco *********
the VISA is valid for 5 years and you show that PDF every time you enter thailand to get stamped in on it
Marco **********
@Tod ********
thanks. So those 17k baht for the certificate are just once in 5 years? Maybe it sounds dumb but I have no idea still finding clarity. For example. If have have bank statement or even 500k in a thai bank account. Shall i still provide contract (in caso of freelancer one)?

Based on what was written in the Royal Gazette:

You don't need to leave for a day. You can leave and return the same day and get the new 180 day stamp.

You can apply for the extension once PER ENTRY, not once during 5 years.

@Ashleigh ***********
yes, 180 days + a year and you’re a tax resident. That is pretty standard around the world.

essentially I think the decision for a lot of people looking to extend is “can I be bothered with/do I want to find flights and possible accommodation out of the country for less than 10k”.

Great visa for those who want to use Thailand as a base and travel around a bit!
Brandon ************
@Lewis *****
No accommodation required if you are doing a pure border bounce. You don't even need to find a flight. You can go to a land border and be out and back in Thailand in an hour. Or fly to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and back in the same day.
Ashleigh ************
@Lewis *****
I think as well there are tax implications if you stay in the country for longer than 180 days

@Lalle *********
the Thai tax year runs from January to December. More than 180 days in this period could give you tax residency issues.
James ********
@Lalle *********
yes. It's the CUMULATIVE number of days in a calendar year.
Pete *******
@Lalle *********
it’s 180 days in any tax year not 180 continual days.

@Matthew *****
so you had to show the immigration office on entry the same docs you provided when applying for the visa online?

no just the e visa and passport. They didn't ask for anything else, though I did keep copies with me in case
Tod *********
CONGRATS,

you got 180 days, you can get ONE extension on that for 180 more days for 10K (at least that's how it's written)

OR

it would seem you could just exit/re-enter and get a new 180 day entry stamp (no one knows because no one got a 180 day entry, exited re-entered and got a new entry stamp yet)

hi 👋🏻

Do you think is it possible to apply DTV from Vientiane but the residency is not from Laos? Means I am not a citizen of Laos 🙃
Tod *********
@Min *********
totally is possible to apply for the DTV without being a resident of the S/E Asian country you're applying in

@Tod ********
thanks so much 😇🙌🏼

do you think it'd be smart to do the extension first, just to be sure? Of course, see what happens in next 6 months as the first wave exits and re enters
