Something going down with bank accounts today. Seen several posts across the visa groups. Not sure if it’s a particular bank specific thing or what. The posts mention about the banks closing accounts of people not on long term visas.

If anyone has information as to what’s going on then please share.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions in expat communities indicate a crackdown by Thai banks on accounts opened with tourist visas. Many reports suggest banks like Bangkok Bank are closing these accounts and introducing new regulations, such as requiring the mobile number linked to the account to match the owner's ID as a measure against scams. Changes started around May 1, 2025, following arrests related to fraudulent activities, especially involving Chinese nationals. There are widespread uncertainties and frustrations among expats regarding the closure of accounts and the emerging banking policies.

Bangkok Bank stopped allowing foreign tourists to open accounts since beginning of the year. Only people holding retirement or non immigrant visas are now able to open an account. Thousands of accounts opened on tourist visas have been blocked. Bank clients are being asked to come into the bank to sort out the situation. Without a long term visa funds are to be withdrawn and accounts closed.

There is a post saying that Bangkok Bank is closing accounts of Russian nationals.

Can't find it now. Not sure if it's true or a scam.

I opened my Bangkok bank account with a visa exempt stamp a bit more than 2 years ago. I just logged in and it is just fine. It looks like Bangkok bank and other banks are closing those accounts with phone number ID not matching with the account owner ID. Because 100 % of the time scammers use this technique. Most Chinese and some other nationals have a Thai lady open a bank account under her name, then they take control of the account with their phone app. That is why you see long queues of Chinese nationals in front of that banks lately.
James *******
Bank account owner's ID and linked phone user's ID MUST match. That is the new regulatory requirement to stop scammers in Thailand
Robert *********
How would the bank know the ID on the phone? Are they talking with all the mobile providers?
Stuart *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Robert ********
Absolutely. If your name isn’t on the register with the phone number that you gave the bank then they’ll lock out the app.
Maksym ***********
@James ******
that's not related to Bangkok bank account suspension. They close now accounts with correct name on sim card

4 different Banking issues???

1. Chinese scammers opening accounts false docs

2. Accounts opened since 2022 must have phone SIM registered name matching

3. Wise transfer restrictions

4. Operating System for BKK bank must be android 9.0 as minimum, for Security from end March 2025. Or the App wont operate.

...... when trying to check my account just discovered number 4 caught me out
James ******
@Gordon **********
I use Apple and iMac and there’s no problem accessing it online for bangkok bank

Haha. Funny if true. All those people that try to tell us their anecdotes how they got their bank account on a tourist visa and that no one can take it away from them 🤣🤣🤣 or the wasted agent money… lol 😂

Is it happening to people who initially opened on tourist visas? Like when you could buy insurance and just open a bank that way?
Chris *********************
Iv had k bank account for many years, have a standing order from my uk account. When I come back to uk now and again I send international bank transfer. Never used wise or any other company like that ,never had any problems, it's when the thai banks don't know where money comes from that's the problem.

Got all my money Sunday before I left Bangkok from my Krungsri Bank. They made every time I came after Covid a mess with the mobile number. Now they wanted at the central Pattaya office a contract from AIS with my name on it. Then it takes them 4 working days to open the app for you with new login data.

I skipped that and left only 1500 baht on the account. Withdraw all the money 💰.

To much hassle. And unclear situation for the future as well. Who knows what documents they want, when they close it. What happen then when you are not in Thailand? A complete Thai 🇹🇭 piss take.
Dany ********
@Kito *****
yeah better use your foreign account, even if you stay long term. not much more expensive actually… wise/etc. fee vs. atm fee
Darin ********
Bangkok bank informed me that my phone number had to be under my name. My Thai wife just added my number on her account. I had to go to my phone provider and change the mobile number into my name.

I was on a 90 day visa when l first opened my account years ago. Bangkok Bank informed me l need to report with a long term visa which I have. They will copy current visa and reopen my account. I was informed that Bangkok Bank branches are privately owned and branches will deal with other branches when it comes to solving issues with accounts

I am not broke. I've had my account for 15 years and opened it legally at the time. My only financial crimes are spending plenty whilst on my many trips. I am planning to move here permanently in a year or two. So perhaps you could open your mind a little wider.

I have posts covering this on other forums, Bangkok Bank Pattaya

Stems from illegal gambling and allegedly Chinese influence and mule accounts and expand from there. Also cracking down on student visas.

I don't know the answer, but it does seem to be linked to (and following) the arrest of Chinese people that were operating illegally.

I believe that people are conflating two different events happening at a similar time, the Chinese scammers and mobile security confirmation which WILL result in non verified accounts being closed...

Nowhere does that article say accounts will be closed. They will simply lose app access until verified.

They were closing accounts opened with false documents from Chinese scammers on tourist visas (or visa exempt entry probably)
Sue **********
Is there any official site for this? There are so many foreigners who were able to open a Thai bank account in former years with a tourist or exemption 30 days visa and since then been transfering the money whenever they travel to Thailand on a tourist visa or exempt visa mode for years. All of those acc. will be closed now?
Wayne *******
@Sue *********
I opened one 13 years ago and havent been in Thailand for 16 months. I havent received any info stating anything is wrong. That said, they could close it without telling me but personally its no biggy as I only left a few quid the account anyway
Andy ********
@Wayne ******
how would you possibly know if you are not in Thailand? Can you read the SMS messages that are sent to the Thai mobile number the bank has for you? Can you physically receive mail from the address you gave?

i got Krung Thai bank account i opened my bank account on student visa one year ago. usually they send message on registered mobile number or mention in app as well. no further details about closing bank account. i guess mostly having issue with Bangkok bank because they allow some nationalities to open bank account tourist visa they get through an agent services.
Paul *******
The Thai Government has required banks to close nom Thai bank accounts unless they are proven to be held by lomg term visa/extension holders. To do with illegal scams and especially by Chinese illegal operations.
Darin ********
@Paul ******
you are 100% correct
Mark ********
@Paul ******
According a report from a visa agent, internal BKK bank regulations currently prohibit opening accounts on tourist visas because of regulatory issues, but there is no actual legal prohibition (i.e. they're not prima facie illegal). There are issues with accounts which don't match registered mobile numbers etc. but that's a general regulatory issue, not one specific to tourist visas

my Bangkok Bank account is blocked, l have to travel to the branch l opened my account at. I have to report in person with my visa status and they will reopen my account. The account saw blocked Saturday afternoon.
Nitzan *****
@Darin *******
How did you get notified?
Darin ********
@Nitzan ****
they don’t notify me about closing my account, l went to the village store and my scan was rejected. I tried transferring money to my wife’s bank and was rejected. I when to nearest bank and they informed me of the situation. They informed me about the requirements to put my phone number in my name that matches my bank account, it was a notification on the bank app in regards to my phone number.
James *******
@Darin *******
Everyone already knew for a long time that they were cracking down on accounts with phone numbers belonging to someone other than account owner. This is how scammers work.
Garrett ***********
@Darin *******
Right, so it had nothing to do with visas, it was because the phone number associated with your account isn't linked to you.
Darin ********
@Garrett **********
no l change my phone number two months ago when the bank gave me notice and l linked my phone number and account to my bank account. I was getting ready to travel from Isan to Jomtien tomorrow but Bangkok Bank must be conducting reviews of ligament account holders and removed the block on my account. I have a long term visa.

@Garrett **********
yes, true, long lines in Pattaya banks

@Garrett **********
it was literally in the news the other day, when they bust a massive scam ring.
Mark ********
@Adam *******
What was in the news was their closing accounts connected to scammers which had been opened using falsified documents. If there's been an order that the banks have to close accounts opened on tourist visas, kindly post a link to that article

There is a lot of posts of various groups that International payments are not getting through. If this Is what your referring to most are due to the changes in the bank regulations from 1st May whereby only 5 or 6 banks can accept wise transfers and these are restricted to 500kthb (it was 50kthb).

Additionally if your mobile number is not in your name and the same as your baking app, they threatened to close accounts.
Wayne ********
@Colin *********
The Chinese are queuing up at the banks to close their accounts, I don’t know the specifics but it sounds like Chinese tourists moving sums of money in & out of bank accounts in Thailand. I guess we’ll know in a few days
James ******
@Wayne *******
where can they move them to Thailand? Doesn’t let you move out money.
Wayne ********
@James *****
No idea 🤷‍♂️
Graeme ******
@Wayne *******
I read it was because they were withdrawing g 50kbaht a day and it was triggering the anit fraud system the banks have and stopping their atm cards
