I arrived at Phuket airport today with my DTV visa from 2024. They needed an onward ticket, or they wouldn't let me in. Just so you're all aware of this. Rules may change during the game. Beware.
Answer summary
The original poster reported that upon arrival in Phuket with a DTV visa, they were required to present an onward ticket, highlighting that rules may vary. This sparked a discussion among commenters regarding the actual need for an onward ticket for DTV visa holders, with some mentioning that it is generally not enforced by Thai immigration but may be checked by airlines. The conversation includes several experiences as well as references to immigration regulations, with conflicting opinions on whether an onward ticket is necessary or not for DTV visas.

I just got to DMK airport for the fourth time yesterday (I have a DTV visa for a workation - 2024). I bought a Swadee pass (fast track) from AOT for 1500 THB, and it was so quick—no questions asked, and it was all sorted in under 5 minutes!

Get a bus ticket like from Hat Yai to Malaysia. It does not have to be a flight ticket.
LongTimeLivi************
LongTimeLivi************
Section 12 of the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 requires foreigners to demonstrate they will depart Thailand within their allowed stay. It does not specify “flight” — only that onward travel must be shown.

I have never been asked to show onward travel by Thai Immigration in my over 35 years coming and going expect for a few times by airlines from overseas. I would just tell the airline I live in Thailand and that ended the questions.

Just purchase a refundable ticket and you can cancel once you get into the kingdom… remember you bought a refundable ticket !

It's a special type of tourist visa. The original poster says; 'Rules may change during the game' - They haven't. They also say: 'Beware' - No need.

I know, but tourist visa it is.

At the end of the day, each immigration officer makes the final call and can ask for anything.
LongTimeLivi************
LongTimeLivi************
For DTV visas, proof of onward travel is not officially required at entry, unlike tourist visa exemptions — but airlines may still demand it before boarding. Thai immigration officers generally do not enforce onward ticket checks for DTV holders. Many references say this.

LongTimeLivingInThailand that's exactly the point of the op's post isn't it?

Rules of law there changes, whenever, whatever.
Luit *****************

LongTimeLivingInThailand Where did you find it is officially not required, since these requirements are general requirements for tourists.

Airlines should normally not ask when you have any visa.

Just buy a phony ticket from onward ticket. Com. It's like 500 baht and it's a legit ticket that's in the database when it's looked up. You just pay for the reservation. I used it to get into the Philippines a few days ago and it was super simple. I'll be using this every time.

No there weren't or else someone would have posted. Everyone likes to complain. What we are talking about now may never have happened. If it did, it was clearly a 'one off' mistake by an Immigration Officer. I doubt we will read any verifiable reports of repetition in the future.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
Why should I try to find reports of enforcements of requirements.

There were some in the past, there is one now, and there will be in the future, all perfectly normal and not worth discussing.

The only thing about it worth discussing might be if they use some kind of algorithm who to check or if it is completely aselect.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
You won't be able to find any other verifiable reports of DTV holders being asked to provide sight of return/onward tickets. Moving forward, can we now expect to see more verifiable reports in the future? I think not.

Luit *****************

@Luit ****************
How do you know that a ‘lot more people’ are being asked? This is the first report which would indicate that it isn’t happening. Since this report nobody else has stated they were required to show return/onward ticket otherwise entry would be denied.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
I am not concerned at all, I always book return flights.

Since DTV is a tourist visa you should at each entry also have the standard requirements, return/onward flight before end of stamped in period, 20k cash and proof of accomodation.

These might be checked or not, I never worry about it, I do not enter without any of these.

I am quite sure ther are already a lot more people asked to show these, but most people would not report it, because it are just normal questions.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
I said it is a fact that, until today, there haven't been any reports of a DTV holder being asked to provide sight of return/onward tickets. Nobody needs to be concerned about something that doesn't happen. It is yourself who is apparently obsessed about this requirement. I don't understand why because you personally haven't been asked and neither has anyone else until today. As I've already stated, there are two possible explanations; 1) Immigration Officer got it wrong or 2) Fabricated report.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
What do you consider as verifiable?

You just don't trust
@Renske ***********
?

I don't see she is like you posting all kind of rubbish.

When you say it is a fact, it is up to YOU to tell why it is a fact, just point us to some legislation showing the DTV exemption.

You can find on a lot of places what are the requirements for tourists to enter Thailand, and also that DTV is a tourist visa.

Nowhere is an exemption for DTV stated, but you seem to know better.

Last time I asked at the local immigration it was not about this subject, because that is well known, but he said his collegues at the border are free to decide which requirements they check and which they don't check, so they might decide not to check onward travel for all tourists.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
Not my statement but a fact. There have been no verifiable reports of a DTV holder entering/reentering Thailand being asked to provide sight of return/onward tickets. If it is your belief that Immigration Officers should be doing so, then your local immigration office would be best placed to explain to you why this is apparently not happening.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
It is your statement, not mine.

Why should I ask what I already know.

General rules for tourists coming into Thailand are already long time existing and did not change

This is surprising because no one will have a ticket for 180 days later.
