This discussion emphasizes the need for travelers entering Thailand, particularly those on a tourist or non-immigrant visa, to carry a certain amount of cash (often noted as 20,000 THB) to comply with immigration regulations. Participants share their experiences at border crossings, mention the potential for arbitrary enforcement of these rules, and caution about dressing appropriately to avoid issues at immigration. There are anecdotes about past experiences regarding being refused entry for not meeting the supposed financial thresholds or for being perceived as 'hippies.' Overall, the conversation highlights the unpredictability of immigration checks and stresses the importance of being prepared.
advises all of his clients to carry 10.000THB. Regardless of which type of visa.

Yes, I know. I asked him twice as I know that tourist/non-immigrant has always been 20.000. He posted recently that bribes are not accepted anymore in Sadao but then people commented with different experiences.
I'm going back to Thailand tomorrow (Surat Thani airport) and still not sure whether I should bring 10 or 20k. Probably better safe than sorry I guess.

don't get me wrong, that guy pushes a LOT of paper (gets visas for people) BUT he was also the one telling everyone to put 200 baht in their passport when they were stamping into the country too :/
That signage posted are the actual requirements of proof of financials

Nothing new, just a reminder you can also be deported for wearing a Chang singlet. Not really up for discussion if it's enforced or not, It's The Law.

Joe, Im 90% sure its at the Sungai Kolok border. I did the train about 5 years ago all the way from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok then the border is about 1km ish away so I walked over into Malaysia...Im almost sure that sign is on the entry to Thailand on the Malaysia side......as I said...90% sure mate :-)
Yeah I know it's at one of the Malayan borders as back in the "Hippie" times those were the only borders we could cross legally by land.
Just thought you might know at which specific border this sign was. I like to have/give proper references for where my information comes from whenever possible. I'm not really a speculator, my endowment policy tough me a lesson :-)

They used to ask politely if you're a hippie or not as they were not quite sure what a hippie was :-) :-)
. When I first crossed from Singapore to Johore Baru in 1976, if you appeared to be a hippy, they'd stamp SHIT in your passport and give you 2 days to leave Malaysia. It meant suspected hippy in transit.

my first winter in Thailand,
good old hippie time :-)
Soon they will need to change that sign.
- An alien with "Yoga" characteristics .... " seams to me more timely:-)
it's not my photo but I HAVE actually seen that text about hippies on a sign at one of the southern borders with Malaysia, it is definitely legit.

I was refused entry for being a Hippy, not having sufficient funds, not wearing an appropriate shirt or being barefoot and always managed to soort it out at the same day, maybe a few hours later but at the same day ;-)
Good old days :-)

Yeap, nothing new. Never been disputed. Thanks for the picture. (Y) Just like to know where you saw that. Which border crossing for reference.

If "hippy" characteristics were grounds for kicking people outta the country the entire city of Pai would have NO foreigners at all :O

Not really up for discussion if it's enforced or not.
No body knows how often Immigration checks a day or not.
So just a reminder and hopefully, Admin blocks further comments
Wearing singlets bloody well should be against the law! Along with wearing elephant pants and hipster beards.

You and me both

David N Viscuso I completely accept that "of late" it has become an issue. That's what I'm saying, it has been very rarely enforced in the past. It has become an issue just recently. This is a CHANGE, and it is well for people to be aware of this CHANGE and I will be bringing 20k next time I exit.
I disagree with Joe's "nothing new", that they are apparently enforcing this this week is something new. And I'm not saying they have never enforced it before, either, they have, sporadically, around three years ago the southern land border at Sadao started zealously enforcing it for a few weeks until somebody told them to stop. But this is my point, that the enforcement of this absolutely does change, and we only find out about this through forums like this, not any official pronouncement.
you don't, other than through reports. So much Thai immigration stuff is completely unofficial and unwritten, or there is what is written but what matters is the interpretation and enforcement, that varies widely... like that one border is more difficult than another, or that one consulate is easier than another, or that immigration may flag you after six air visa exempt entries or whatever... this is all useful information, but you will not get it from reading official pronouncements, you will only get it third hand from reports. And it varies all the time- KL for example was not giving tourist visas to non-residents for a long time, now it is... you find this stuff out from asking others, not from reading what is written in the immigration law. Look at the group you are in.
if you say rarely enforced you have not been keeping up to date of late. Not good to be throwing a false sense of security to people. It's the law so you should advocate bringing the 20k cash vice taking the chance.

Again! How do you know how often it's enforced every single day throughout the kingdoms border check points? Any reliable statistics?
as to the enforcement. You know wearing a Chang singlet is actually grounds for immediate deportation? That is literally in the law, they can deport you for wearing a singlet (and not just at the border, if you dress presentably at the border but are found wearing a singlet in Thailand after your arrival, you can be deported) but unsurprisingly this is, like the 20,000 cash requirement, "rarely enforced".
