TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the reasonable costs for hiring a live-in maid and gardener in Chiang Mai, with varying opinions on what constitutes a fair wage. Comments indicate that a live-in maid typically costs between 15,000 to 20,000 THB per month, while gardeners can charge around 400 to 800 THB per day. The conversation reflects differing views on what is considered adequate compensation, especially regarding loyalty and quality of work, highlighting the socio-economic issues surrounding domestic employment in Thailand.

I have a friend who was a maid and I helped her get a better salary. See this site

You may get a young inexperienced person for that money.

Thats an hilariously wrong figure. I could hire maids by the hundred at 350 a day. I dont I pay them 500 a day.

feel free to write to them and tell them they are wrong, what you or others pay don't mean your right!

Not one comment to this man's question mentioned the fact that he would also be providing a place to live. Is that not factored in?

But then they never really get time off, since they are expected to keep an eye on the place when the employer is away.

Our muban has a lawn crew that work by appointment and will cut, bag, sweep, trim, and whatever else is needed in about 15-20 minutes for 500 baht. Depending on the amount of work you have for them to do, the crew varies up to 8 guys, and the work is very good. We have them over a couple of times a month. We have a cleaning lady we have used for years, and we use her twice a month for deep cleaning. We pay her 1000 baht per visit to cover her work and travel. Best to get here and try to sort it out once you have your living situation worked out.

The 400 baht you speak of is minimum wage for a full days work. It’s not per hour. ??

i pay 120b per hour for a maid. she is not a live in. the gardener does my yard for 1000b each time...about 2 a month in rainy season and about 0 times a month in dry season...:)

Be sure to factor in the 5 months of smoke. My costs for evacuation were well beyond 50k a month, rental, things needed while away, care for home while gone, travel expenses... getting out of the smoke meant going south and it was much more expensive.

Seems as I am getting older, i have less tolerance for the smoke.

I had not factored in a 5 month hotel stay (with pets, one dying during the evacuation from motion sickness meds :( )- and this year I was so shocked to see the entire country, above bangkok- covered in dense, thick, unbreathable smoke. The costs of depression and cancer risk exposure aren't typically considered. Take care of yourself.

Where are these people pulling these figures from, do you over pay people in your own country??

There is a difference between being a generous person and a complete fool, as far as tipping people that is an American thing not a thailand thing, everything has to be put into perspective, google what ever you want, but reality is living here, a farm worker earns 300 baht per day , a factory worker earns 13,000 baht a month, a qualified welder earns 900 baht for a 10 hour shift and that is what the 3 Thais sitting with me told me they earn, and they find these posts crazy.

Live in means she lives rent free, doesn't necessarily pay water and electricity, has no costs for her commute to work. A basic job earns you around 300-500 baht/day but you'd still have all these costs. If you want someone who speaks English that can double your income (doesn't have to but can). If you want to be reasonable, my personal suggestion would be anything between 400-800 baht/day.

15,000 a month for a maid. Plus tips each time you have a visitor. Don’t pay less than this as they will leave if they are offered more elsewhere.

Gardener it would be best to approach a gardening company, and do a contract with them. They will charge you on the size of the garden. It’s usually 3000-4000 a month.

If you have a pool, your pool cleaner will cost about 3000 a month too.
Jeff *******
@Andrew ******
Ouch thats a bit high - the pool rate almost universally is 2000 though I pay 1700 for the best one I've ever had unless of course you have a 25 metre pool. Gardeners for a 500sqm garden usually get 1500 a month, twice weekly visits, sometimes 2000.
Andrew *******
@Jeff ******
I must be getting gouged in Samui then. I guess everything is a bit more expensive in Samui. Do you have your pool guy come twice a week?
Jeff *******
@Andrew ******
Yep Samui probably is a bit higher though Hua Hin isn't known for being cheap! Yes twice a week, don't need him more than that and does a really good job. If the heavens open, and the rain can make your pool look crap in hours, he comes around to add chemicals to head it off at no extra charge

Many mentioned minimum wage but in reality it’s expected more; at least what I’ve been paying.

My home is located in Udonthani; a much larger city (but in a different region) My maid is 500-700 bath per day with free lunch/snacks and drinks. The gardeners are project-by-project pay. Given that my home is situated on a 2 +Rai of land my gardeners get paid as much as over 7,000 per project. Some doubled!

I was unable to find someone that willing to accept the minimum wage.
Dan ********
@Sasi ***********
strange bunch. I know of a few people, men and women, taking what work they can, 200-400 for odd jobs, short days. But when I ask for people to work (non-essential stuff) there's a stand off on wage. Yesterday they worked happily for 400, but today won't go for less than 1000. I refuse, not being extorted, and these guys end up with no work all day, and poor once again. Following days they will go to work for 300-400 again. I've also seen some taxi drivers and other trades only take a job or customer as long as its farang, and they are overcharging or scamming even, often losing the job/customer due to this, ending up with nothing.

Jorge ****
The LOS gov is considering raising daily min wage to 400 THB per day, so a gardener would be tickled pink if you gave him 500 for a day's work. Assuming that the live-in help was there daily, 30 days a month, 30 X 400 = 12,000 THB, or $330. A
****
employee earns about that much. Your being "cheap" is nobody's business. Your survival is more important.
Vin *********
@Jorge ***
You neglected the included cost of rent, meals, utilities, etc.
Jorge ****
@Vin ********
a studio here in Phuket town is 2,500 THB, a dish of fried rice, made to order is 60. Three meals a day, 3 X 60 = 180, and for the month, 30 X 180 = 5,400. Add room and board, 2,500 + 5,400 = 7,900. Now add water and electricity, estimated at 1,000, so the total comes to mear 9,000 THB. At present, minimum wage is about 360 X 30 = 10,800. There is money leftover for transport, and other minor expenses. I personally know expats who brag about living on 18-20k THB/mo, and they live much better than the local guy.
Vin *********
@Jorge ***
You still are not comprehending.

You listed off costs, etc compared to wages.

BUT ... the op is wanting a live in.... so wages plus a place to live, utilities, etc are included.

Not they have their own place. 🙄
Jorge ****
@Vin ********
ah, ok. I listed a generic run of the mill example. My bad.

So we subtract the rent, food, transportation, and utilities from the min wage,

10,800 - 8,900 = 1,900 THB, <$55...

Thank you for the observation. It looks like a great deal to have live-in assistace. I'll propose this to my next door neighbor but with the generous offer of three times 1,900, or 6k THB.
Regina **********
@Jorge ***
So your maid is expected to work 30 days a month? More like a slave then. But of course, you do need a slave to 'survive' Sheesh man.
Dan ********
@Regina *********
I doubt she's doing 8am-5pm with a lunch break, 7 days a week.. more likely a slow saunter pace of work for an hour or two, disappear for an hour or two, reappear for another hours work, then another break, and unless you request something, you won't see them until morning now. She ain't doing 8 hours hard graft.
Jorge ****
@Regina *********
it is *them* that want the work. I personally have nothing to do with it. By the way, I met a man who worked as a gardener in a plant and flower shop, daily, for seven years. One day he asked his local boss for a few days off to visit his family in the province. He was swiftly fired.

For a gardener the price depends on the size, the work, do they supply the implements or will you. I would look at somewhere between 800 to 1'500 THB Per visit. For a live in maid I have a full time housekeeper who does not live in. I pay her 15K plus 400THB weekly to pay for her lunch and petrol. I pay overtime and 10 days paid leave per year. She is super and dedicated so she gets bonus payments on a regular basis. You can get someone for 8K or less but the moment someone offers 500THB more than you they will be gone
Ally ************
@Lone *********
Your arrangement is very generous.. and if you can afford it then that is fine.. however it is not representative of the 'norm' in Thailand by any means.. as mentioned elsewhere here.. the average monthly pay for a Thai worker rarely exceeds 10,000 baht.. and whilst a good housekeeper / maid is undoubtedly worth their weight in gold.. their pay scale would not compare with that of a qualified tradesmen say.. so it really comes down to what you feel like paying.. and that is often driven by the relationship you have established.. if you like someone and are comfortable having them around your home then you may be willing to pay them more than the going rate.. and once you bond with somebody there is a natural desire to want to help them out financially.. in the end any arrangement should be fair to both parties.. meaning neither one is being taken advantage of by the other!
Bruce *********
@Ally ***********
that is not generous at all. That is the extreme bare minimum that is legally allowed. Even an increase of 100 baht per day would make a huge difference in this person's life and that amount would probably mean nothing to you. Even then if I were to hire someone I would at least pay 15,000 minimum. A good maid is hard to come by that is loyal. All it takes is just one person just pay them just a little bit more and they'll leave you in a heartbeat.
Ally ************
@Bruce ********
With the greatest respect.. what you think and what you choose to do is entirely up to you.. your choices and your decisions are not binding on the rest of society.. everyone that hires help of any form must do what is right for them at the time.. that might not be what you consider to be right of course.. but provided it does not breach any laws of the land then it is quite acceptable.. in the end the market is driven by supply and demand.. and as you rightly point out.. if an employee is unhappy with the terms of engagement they are free to look for a new employer.. just as the employer is free to replace them should they be dissatisfied.. there is no 'one size fits all' solution here.. and employees may move on for many reasons not just grievances over pay.. in the end the employer has to weigh up the risk of losing them if not managed properly.. and factor that into their decision making.. it's horses for courses as they say!
Jeff *******
@Ally ***********
You hear about this 'norm' and 'going rate' but I don't know a single person who would get away with it. In the arse end of nowhere possibly, but if I or any of my friends expected someone to work all day in a garden, or carry our repairs all day, or clean the house for a full day (spring clean etc) and pay them 500 baht, let alone the ludicrous minimum, we would get laughed at and spend all day looking for that elusive person and end up doing it ourselves! The days of the Raj are long gone!

I'm very happy to hear that you're taking care of your maid. It always upsets me how others are happy paying someone 7,000 or $8,000 baht a month and having that person work 6 days a week with no life for themselves and nothing really to support their family on. Just just paying an extra 6,000 baht a month could change the maid's Life and the family they try to take care of. And for most westerners that extra amount is negligible. It's also true what you said. You can have someone working hard for you for very little but the moment someone's offers them a small increase in pay, They will leave you in a second. It's better to pay them well and have that loyalty so they stay with you.

People shouldn't lecture others on how to spend their money.. particularly when they have no knowledge of that persons financial situation.. a sweeping statement like '...isnt going to affect you one bit' has no substance unless you have a real understanding of the OA's wealth.. and just because you think a certain way it doesn't mean you are right.. or make it feasible for somebody else to do as you would do.. people need to stick to the script and offer constructive advice instead of sitting in judgement and rushing to criticise!
Jonathan ********
@Ally ***********
said the person lecturing, judging and rushing to criticize … just saying :)
Ally ************
@Jonathan *******
Not at all.. my comment was aimed at everyone that participates in these forums.. hence the use of the word 'people'.. unfortunately you rushed to a judgement to criticise me.. enuff said!
Jeff *******
@Ally ***********
You are at least 30 years too old to use toe curlingly crass statements like 'enuff said' - and even then you got it wrong!
Ally ************
@Jeff ******
So says the self appointed guru of crassness.. criticising other people for holding a different opinion seems to have become a regular hobby for some people.. and strangely every such 'critic' believes their voice is the most knowledgeable and most righteous.. they are incapable of offering an opinion without throwing insults at someone.. but they fail to recognise that every 'normal' person that reads their venomous post/s will instantly dismiss them as a trumped up tw@t with nothing meaningful to contribute.. being civil costs nothing and should be everyone's default choice when beginning a dialogue.. indeed it takes a lot more effort to be disrespectful.. yet it seems to come naturally to some.. a very sad indictment on the world we now live in!
Jeff *******
@Ally ***********
lolol brilliant - 'trumped up twat' is as civil as it gets I guess. Now get nanny to put that dummy back in whilst the adults pick up your toys 🤣
Ally ************
@Jeff ******
More sarcasm.. more righteousness.. completely proves my point.. thank you 🙏
Jeff *******
@Ally ***********
but it was YOU who said trumped up twat right? You remember that right? You appear to be struggling with this
Ally ************
@Jeff ******
My comment was not personal.. i simply stated that people reading such sarcastic critique would inevitably determine the aggressor to be such a person.. it was a collective observation.. unlike your own attacks on several contributors which are indeed very personal.. you need to give your head a serious wobble before spouting off my friend!
Joseph ****
@Ally ***********
It's okay. The sactimonious "tw@t" came in flailing about, instantly picking a fight with three different people. And like too many of the brain-dead ne'er-do-wells wasting away his days on a bar stool with a local hag on the stool next to him hoping he'll buy her a drink, he won't. He'll self-righteously spend other people's money for them for the cheap thrill he gets from finger-pointing in a public forum, but it's all fantasy. "Tw@t" is the type who should be the last person touching anybody''s money. Including his own. No wonder the bar hag is the only one who will give him any attention. If she only knew he's probaby the least generous, most hypocritical of all the denenates starting early in the entire bar.
Jeff *******
@Ally ***********
I haven't attacked anyone, perhaps I need to amend stuff for the more fragile? Still I'm yet to call anyone a 'twat' though, I mean who would think that was personal?!
Jonathan ********
@Ally ***********
add trying to silence others after you get in the last word … enough said?
Darlene *********
@Bruce ********
how do you know what his finances look like...if he didnt give her a job at all, would that make her better off?? There is always that one person that likes to spend others money🙄🙄🙄🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Jeff *******
@Darlene ********
and thankfully there is always one that wants to do the right thing for other humans less well off than them. Try it one day whilst counting your baht, it's liberating.
Darlene *********
@Jeff ******
what would you know about liberating...hiding behind a fake account...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bruce *********
@Darlene ********
If they have enough money to hire a maid they have enough money to pay an extra $5,000 baht a month. If she didn't have this job someone else would hire her pretty quickly.
Darlene *********
@Bruce ********
then there isn't a problem right, she can find another job..simple 🙄🤣
Jonathan ********
@Bruce ********
, using $ says a lot, btw perhaps you would feel better by making up the difference for Bobby’s lady
Jeff *******
@Jonathan *******
It says nothing, but your problems with someone treating someone else well speaks volumes!
Jonathan ********
@Jeff ******
it says they if don't know enough about Thailand to even refer to the local currency, which is what one gets payed in here, then they don't understand the economics of the country.
Jeff *******
@Jonathan *******
Seriously? Perhaps some people are smart enough to instantly convert it into their heads! It's 'paid'
Jonathan ********
@Jeff ******
Seriously? I'm sure they figured out how to convert (calculator, exchange app, ask their mommy every time etc) when needed or should if they are giving out advice on a Thailand page. What is 'paid'?
Jeff *******
@Jonathan *******
Not really, it only takes my brain a nano second to round any dollar/pound quote up to the nearest baht
Jonathan ********
@Jeff ******
so you're not really serious? You're soooo smarttttt but can't even answer my question.
Jeff *******
@Jonathan *******
You didn't ask me a question, a question is denoted by a '?' want to try again ?
Jonathan ********
"so you're not really serious? "
Jeff *******
@Jonathan *******
About what?- why is that in speech quotes? who are you quoting? look, get an adult to help you construct some meaningful sentences and then write down what they tell you
Jonathan ********
@Jeff ******
so obvious you troll keeps deleting your comments that I replied to , blocking your sorry ass

I there's a minimum wage in Thailand, maybe 400 baht a day? It would be worth checking that, as a guidelines
Montaque *********
@Tim ********
I heard construction worker gets 12 to 15.00 a day
Tim *********
Actually I just looked it up and it's a bit lower even in Bangkok - 363. This link would be a good starting point to research it

Well I am willing to pay a fair wage fir the right people, just not sure what that is.
Darlene *********
@Kent ******
Think 200 baht per hour for a (fairly good English speaking) helper. That is fair for part time work.

so much more than a nurse at a private hospital....

no clue at all of local economy in villages

its half a day's salary for a manual worker.

1000 baht a day live in maid and gardener 200 baht per hour is reasonable 👌

I give the kids begging for money in the street a thousand bhat. 😂
Dan ********
@David ********
and they give it to their gang master, who quickly smokes it and gambles it online. So think again, before pulling moves like that. Also that adds to inflation

@Mark *******
"live in" so with accommodation included. Although, if I could find a lady that did all I wanted, as I wanted, when I wanted, she could be worth 30k/month (with deduction for accommodation).. but nobody wants to work, ok be poor.. Of those that do, most don't want to drive "up the mountain" of a hill, 170m above sea-level, ok be poor. Those few that start work don't see the end of day 1 due to a gross misconduct. Ok, be poor. Those that finish day 1, never come back.

@Dan *******
What gibberish are you talking....?

30,000 baht a month for a maid🤣

Conny **********
@Peter ********
so you think that they should be among the ten percent top paid people in Thailand? Most Thais don't see 10.000 THB a month...
Jeff *******
@Conny *********
You're living in the past, or telling yourself that to make yourself feel better. the average thai salary across all bands is now 15,410baht. Plus 13 bank holidays.
Conny **********
@Jeff ******
of course is the average salary higher than what most Thais earn. Do check on mean instead of average...
Kev *********
@Peter ********
what? 1600baht/ day for a gardener? With your family name you could 'weed all' yourself surely. Just kidding Peter but your figures are over generous in my opinion.
Bruce ***********
@Kev ********
he was being a smartarse
Peter *********
@Kev ********
he said in a few years so by then figures would be fair
Kev *********
@Peter ********
even in a few years (say 5 years) taking the low Thai inflation figures into account do you think income will quadruple in that time?
Radost **************************
@Kev ********
low inflation? I guess when math was reached in school you have been absent 😁 close to 10%+/year for the real costs, gas, rent, electric and food
Peter *********
@Kev ********
no but the falang asking question will
Kev *********
@Peter ********
I don't think the general westerners salary will quadruple in 5 years. Say currently a nurse gets £35k/ year. Do you really think the salary will be up to £140k/ year? Great expectations Peter.

I'm cheap too. That's why I have to get rid of a house full of clearance deals before I move to Thailand. I know a good deal when I see it, doesn't mean I should buy it.😔if only I had self control

@Garrett **********
its ok.you are cheap.

are you cheap because you have to be to get by in Thailand or are you cheap because that's how you are?
