TLDR : Answer Summary
When planning a move to Thailand, several key factors will influence your monthly expenses. Aside from housing, which can range from 15,000 to 150,000 THB depending on the location and type, you should budget for health insurance, international school fees, and groceries. For international schools, costs can be as high as 50,000 THB per month, with additional enrollment fees. Other considerations include utility bills, transportation (especially if you need a car), and general living expenses which can vary greatly based on lifestyle choices. On average, expats suggest a monthly budget ranging from 50,000 to 130,000 THB for a comfortable lifestyle, although this can be higher in tourist-heavy areas like Bangkok or Phuket.

Some proper grown up research would help

I am spending 60k on rent a month, 800k a year on school per kid, 20k a month to rent an SUV, 20k on groceries,spending 60k more on entertainment per month.

@Judd *********
you are faulty why not say in the 1st place your living on expenses hahaha 😆 faulty person

@Chris ********************
it appears you don’t understand compensation packages beyond an hourly rate. If you are on a fixed retirement income budgeting is much more important if you don’t anticipate increasing income or assets.
Chris *********************
@Judd *********
not on a pension not on expenses don't rip anyone off .

You got your expenses and salary ripping small companies off getting them to join a bigger company. I worked for rand mines in SA iv seen it all b4 you on expenses, plus bonus for ripping smaller companies off .enough said you low life company yes man
Judd **********
@Chris ********************
sounds like you got it figured out. Glad we are both enjoying our time in Thailand
Chris *********************
@Judd *********
you must have some money 💰 to be spending all that
Judd **********
@Chris ********************
also in Phuket so it is expensive here
Chris *********************
@Judd *********
that's just under 4k sterling a month 😳

@Chris ********************
like I said, everyone’s income is different. Passive income greater that that is forever in Thailand.
Chris *********************
@Judd *********
I think you pissing up people's backs .

20k a month you could buy a suv for that a month, 800k on kids school is it a boarding , school. You rent for 60k a month ,you must not be very confident in your wife not to commit to buying, and as for 800k to send your kids to school must be a sleep over school
Judd **********
@Chris ********************
800k is tuition only per kid. I am underselling my spend
Judd **********
@Chris ********************
I am not retired. Still working and it is less than living in the US.
Chris *********************
@Judd *********
I'm not retired but I keep going back to uk to work but 160k a month + school fees ????
Judd **********
@Chris ********************
everyone has different income but this is far below the $20k a month I was spending in China to live a similar lifestyle.

So your company is paying for all this ,got you now all on expenses. Tut tut you here to take smallish thai company's down to ad to your company's portfolio,

? Tens to hundreds of millions of dollar investments mostly in China. Like I said. Everyone has different budgets. Companies value you for less than the value you create. It’s ok to be comfortable making 1 or 2 million baht a year in Thailand. Lots of people are ok doing that. I just think to live on a western lifestyle I am targeting 15-20M baht.

About THB 130k a month

@Bruce ****
I am not disagreeing outright....but $3700 or so USD seems to be an awful lot for a family of just 3. But then again we all have different amounts of money to spend....and different lifestyles to live. I know of many expat families who make do in Thailand for much less.
Mark ******
One can add as much as they wish....I can even add a month in Dubai at the most expensive hotel while I am at it! The list is obviously endless and would be only limited by our imaginations. The fact is that many ex-pats in Thailand do not have health insurance....including some popular bloggers (which is simply stupid.....but!). And even those elderly with multiple medical ailments can obtain adequate insurance for under $200 a month......I believe that the cost is around $160/month for a 60-year-old. Now, I would assume that someone with expensive medical conditions would think hard and long about moving abroad....especially if they were from a country with "free" socialized medical care such as Canada or England. And the young and healthy can get insurance for as little as $42 a month.

A yearly flight back home would be a choice, and certainly not a monthly cost (although you can budget that cost when you look at your yearly budget) but rather an extraneous cost. How many ex-pats that settle permanently in Thailand usually go back home yearly to visit would be a valid question....I have no idea about the answer to that question. But that would have to be looked at when you are deciding to move to Thailand and either accounted for or eliminated.

Just keep it simple! As I had stated before....you have your state of living and it does seem to be at a very high standard when compared with most expats. I am sure that some with like-minded budgets like yours will agree with your estimation but I have an idea that many others not on a similar budget will not agree and that most make do with a great deal less than $3000+.

For the person above who had asked this question....one cost that many others do not have is school fees. I will assume that he would have done a least some groundwork on that.....
Bruce *****
@Mark *****
just add health insurance and a flight back once a year and a few weekends away

Like everything else, schools are a business, so I would suggest that you do a little more research before you part with your hard earned money.

Not sure where you want your child to go to school, but if it’s Bangkok or Pattaya then it is likely to be more expensive than anywhere else in Thailand.

Hope this helps.

Better google search I'ntl schools in that Part if Thailand. That may be your greatest expense. Real Estate listings as well for purchase or rental. All other expenses should be quite reasonable.

a mep school we have to pay for about 70k a year 1st language is English 2nd Chinese 3 thai we live in chainart province. You have to factor a lot of things in .

I still go back to uk for a few months a year to work .

It's not as cheap as it used to be

After going around searching for a international school for our kid, i was shocked at how much it costs for good schools. It ends up being around 50,000 baht per month for the ones that have good facilities and the not so good ones are about 25,000 baht per month. Also, keep in mind you need to pay per semester. And on top of that there is something called donation fee/facility maintenance/enrollment/bribe fee: numerous names, but same bullshit fee, that is about 100,000 baht. Both of which are big lump sums.
John *********
You definitely want a car on Samui, taxis are extortionate. If you're thinking of buying a car/bike, you will need to buy 'certificate of residence' from immigration. Also need one for your driving licence. Probably easier in your wife's name. If you want a 4x4, buy a car in Bangkok and drive it or get it shipped. We live on mainland opposite Samui and I spent a while waiting for a few year old 4x4, ended up buying new, everything was in Bangkok, nothing down here. First class insurance on a 1 year old Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4 is around 20,000 baht a year.

I think it is impossible to give you any clear answer because we don't know your lifestyles, age, standards of living and city where you plan to live. My health insurance covers up to 500k usd w a higher deductible, I am healthy in my mid 40s so my insurance is only in cases of emergency cost 20k baht a year.

Cost of living in Bkk is much higher than other parts of the country. Do u plan on living in bkk or another province?

A descent 3 bedrooms condo is about 40k baht in the city in a good area.

Electricity if u can live without AC is around 1000 baht. With AC running 2500 baht and up.

I chose to live in the center of the city so I don't need a car. Traffic is truly awful.

Your costs will vary dependent upon where you live and what school your send your kid to. When I moved out here I was able to get an idea on rent, school fees etc by using Google. That would be a good starting point seeing as you've given nothing to go on in your post.

Other monthly expenses would probably be for a helper, pool and/or gardening maintenance. Electricity, food, etc.

Can’t really answer as to how much you’d need as that depends on the budget of house (30 - 150k) per month. Which school as prices differ wildly and the type of lifestyle you’d want - would you eat out every day or cook at home etc.

Car hire depends on the car but if it’s not a 4x4 it should be about 10K

yes cars are cheaper in Bangkok, and more of a selection. Thailand has a heavy import tax, so if you buy a Thai made car it usually costs less.
