TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around alternatives to traditional Thai bank accounts, specifically focusing on prepaid cards like Moreta Pay and TrueMoney. While some users mention the convenience of using these services without the need for a Thai bank account, others express concerns about high ATM fees, the necessity of cash top-ups, and the lack of online recharge options. Comments highlight the challenges of foreign currency exchanges and the potential costs associated with these prepaid services.

I just received a reply to my email asking if there’s an online top up facility and the answer was no. Currently the only top up for the card associated with this app is at a Kasikorn Bank foreign exchange booth.

I have further asked if that means on,y cash, or if foreign cars can be used to do that.

Waiting for their reply.

Not true. Cannot avoid high ATM FEES when you must deposit cash. Plus all the hassle. And financial tracking.

Thats not a good solution

@Misha *********
Majority of people are actually honest and don't worry about "tracking" 😂😂😂

Might only be convenient for short terms visitors.

You can’t top up THB directly.

You have to exchange your foreign currency to top up at Kbank exchange.

Can i top up with credit card or always need to go to kasikorn booth?
Dany ********
you still need to top-up with cash 🤣 so there is definitely some cost/fee involved… and then you probably wont find these booths everywhere.

TrueMoney is also available.

@Dany *******
only top up by cash? But there's no sense like that 🙈🤣
Dany ********
@Daniela ********
yeah the thing that you need to top up via cash all these solutions is pretty stupid :(

EDIT: thank you to everyone for confirming True Money does support PromptPay.

OP (incorrect): I don't think TrueMoney supports PromptPay which is the general Thai bank QR system supported by basically everyone. Vendors have to support TrueMoney specifically. This typically means larger retailers like 7-11, Lotus, etc, while PromptPay is much more universally supported including by smaller vendors.

@Ivan ***********
Yes and it has to be foreign currency so you can't add Thai bhat and use QR system

True money support PromptPay :)

@Kévin ********
For DTV holders? I tried and it asks for work permit in Thailand
Dany ********
@Carlos ********
dont need the work permit. local driving license as a second proof of identity. easy
Dany ********
@Ivan ***********
it’s all a big hassle anyway. no real benefit. just have cash and all is good and easy. atm every 50m in thailand 😅 you wont find a K-Bank foreigner booth everywhere.
Adam ********
I've been using Moreta Pay. They charge 3% per transaction, but the onboarding via ACH is like $0.45.

Wondering how this compares cost wise via the exchange rate.
Georgijus ************
So it says no ATM fees ? so where from money coming to prepaid card ?
Valentinas ********
@Georgijus ***********
you exchange cash and put on you e-wallet balance. ofc exchange rate is lower than you can normally get
Georgijus ************
So it's good only for tourists who coming for few weeks, not for DTV holders who plan to stay for years.

@Georgijus ***********
yep, you are better of long term with Wise and the like or Thai account
