Can I open a TrueMoney account in Thailand using a DTV and just my passport as ID?

Hi folks, since I cannot seem to get a Thai bank account with my DTV, I would like to register for a TrueMoney account, so at least I can have the convenience of paying for stuff with QR codes, even if I do have the faff of topping up the account using cash at Seven Eleven. Can anyone confirm that they have been able to open a TrueMoney account being on a DTV and using only your passport as ID. And can the registration all be done with the app, or will I need to actually go to a Seven Eleven when I arrive in Thailand next week? Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on whether it's possible to open a TrueMoney account using a passport while on a Digital Tourist Visa (DTV). Multiple commenters shared their experiences with TrueMoney, indicating that recent users had successfully registered with their foreign passports, though some noted restrictions based on visa status. While the registration process can largely be completed via the app, several users mentioned the need for a local Thai phone number and hinted at potential limitations for accounts linked to tourist visas. Alternative payment options, such as the Tag Thai app provided by Kasikorn Bank, were also suggested.

When you arrive , go to the kasikorn bank exchange .. tell them you want to use TAG THAI .. proceed to exchange your currency to local Thai baht . They gain by getting travelers to use their exchange services .

@Alfred ****
Thanks. Does TAG THAI charge a commission each time you make a QR code purchase?

This is the Taf Thai app

There’s an easier way to have a local Thai QR code that foreigners and travelers can use .. it was launched by Kasikorn bank and the government.. it’s called

‘Tag Thai ‘ you can download the app and fill it up .. one catch : you need to deposit money to kasikorn bank using your currency when you exchange money at their counters

Register a TNG Wallet in Malaysia and Connect it with a wise account and add MYR. Through that you have qr payment over all asean countries via Ali pay. Works great. Although I have a Thai Account, I use this e.g. in 7-11 where PrompPay is not accepted

Can also look into this Fairly new app thats backed by Kasikorn (Green) Bank once signed up with card you can use QR payments too but only able to top up with them and I get better exchange rates via Wise & Revoult...

They don't ask you for a visa, just take a photo of your passport, they also ask for a selfie and an address, you can give a hotel address. You need to have a Thai phone number. You can pay in many places and top up for free at
****
. You also get a virtual debit card that you can register with Grab and Bolt. Grab takes 3 percent if you pay with a foreign card, so it can be used. If you want to transfer money and scan everywhere like Thai citizens, you have to present them with one of several documents: Thai house registration

Thai driving license

Passport with non-immigrant visa

Passport with student visa

Alien identification card

I opened on a normal tourist exemption
Andrew ********
Thats odd I'm going on a student visa and they can get one

@Andrew *******
Student Visa has no restrictions, and worst case, the school gives you a letter.

DTV is new, so banks are confused what to do.

your comment doesn't make sense, what are you trying to say? Get one what? Who are they?

There's a reloadable card available from k Bank now that you can use for qr code payments without needing an account. I think it's called pay and go by you can only get it at one of the two airport branches
Ivan *******
@Esther ****
This would be great but it seems you can only reload with cash - not by card. I looked into it a few days ago and decided that it was more hassle than it was worht

Suggest you look at the TagThai Easy pay app.

You can just scan for TrueMoney, PromptPay via TrueMoney is limited for those who have a work permit.

True money doesn't work on Tourist Visa... Must be Non class.. (I have Thai bank accounts)

I had to go back to tourist visa at the start of the month and my account was suspended...

I need to upload proof of Non class Visa(which I am waiting for new papers etc)

nice, thanks

@Ben *******
you just need a thai phone number as they will send you an OTP code. You can’t change the number afterwards as you need to close the account and open a new one.

@Michi *******
thanks. But I only need the number once for the initial account setup right? I usually get tourist Sims each time I visit, so my number is always changing

@Ben *******
if you change phone you need the OTP again , or when you want to log in to more than one device

yes, tried 2. Both said no

@Ben *******
Are you in Bangkok? Thai Visa Agent is opening accounts for DTVers, long term lease needed.

@Andi **********
Don’t you have a link or address of agent?

@Andi **********
the rules changed again recently, I’ve yet to see an agent opened account without LTV in the last month or so.

@Kevin *******
I know of people recently opening accounts. Rules have changed hence the price rise and more docs needed.

I'm living in Japan, but am going back and forth to Thailand numerous times throughout the year, usually spending 4-6 weeks in Thailand on each visit, in various places, including Bangkok. But I don't have a long term lease anywhere, I just use various Airbnbs each time
Andi ***********
@Ben *******
Ok, it's possible to get a bank account but long term leases are a must. Why don't you use WIse. I'm same as you based In Japan going back n forth but have a Thai account via Wise.

@Andi **********
thanks. I'm OK to use Wise for a bank account, but I'm mainly interested in being able to buy things with QR code, hence why I'm asking about TrueMoney in this post
Andi ***********
@Ben *******
ok i get it now.. There is the new one via kaiskorn bank, just purchase their prepaid card and gain qr code payment access.

I’ve found that tag Thai doesn’t really work with personal QR codes, it will work for businesses but when it comes to small stall holders who are often using personal QR; it just fails. Which is a shame.
Andi ***********
@Calvin *****
oh that's too bad as it's a game changer in many ways
Calvin ******
Ps - try deep pocket, there’s a fee for using scan on there every month, but I’ve found it good
