What are the issues with using the Tag Thai card for expats in Thailand?

I know there's a lot of discussion surrounding bank accounts. My friend and I both got our DTVs at the same time but the difference is that I already had a BKK Bangkok so he decided to explore Tag Thai and the experience wasn't good.

I'll share what happened in case anybody else is thinking about trying TT.

Both landed at Swampy and straight to Kasikorn booth where you can see heavy advertising for TT. "No hab". After 2 more attempts found one land side but it seems the staff really have no interest in this card and each time try to put us off using it or seemed to be just tired of people asking about it.

The booth that did have it, the lady really did not want to have anything to do with it and pleaded with another colleague to set it for my friend. Overall I find this quite strange again giving the heavy promotion.

I was about to get one as a backup in case my bank acc got frozen and had my baht ready in hand but here's the major downfall of this card. You can only load it by converting foreign currency into Thai baht at a Kasikorn booth. You cannot load it directly with THB which is totally bizarre. So basically outside major cities without a Kasikorn exchange you're screwed.

He also had huge difficulty paying and scanning as well as the app constantly crashing. Finally he withdrew the baht and binned the card. Waste of time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses a user's negative experience with the Tag Thai card, highlighting difficulties with obtaining and using the card at Kasikorn Bank, where staff seemed uninterested and unhelpful. Key issues included the inability to top up with Thai baht directly, leading to complications in urban areas without a Kasikorn exchange. The user also noted problems with the card's payment processing and app functionality, ultimately leading to the card being considered a waste of time. Comments from others corroborated some issues and suggested alternatives like True Money for expats.

Just bring cash, a debit and credit card (preferably 2 of each). The ATM user fee sucks, but unless you hold a Thai bank account or a card that refunds this fee (or a trusted local with a bank account you can transfer funds to, such as your wife or children) you'll have no choice but to pay it.

Why is it 'bizarre'? KBank is offering a special convenience product for free, of course they need to make money through bad exchange rates.

I had trouble paying by scanning as well. But was successful using the card like a credit card. I've also withdrawn cash from an atm.

Where is the value in that though if you already have a card (presume you do, to add cash) and you needed to top-up with cash?

Zero value. Remember you can only top up with foreign currency at a Kasikorn FX booth. Despite all the fancy advertising I really don't think they thought this through and it just sounds like a cash grab from Kasikorn

Moreta already works nearly flawless with business QR and personal will be made available in about two months

they said personal qr would be available 2 months ago and now 2 more months

I topped up the TagThai with Thai baht directly at the kiosk in Lotus in Lamai, Samui without issue. How've, it can only be done at their kiosks. I only did because I'd been told one could pay personal QR does, but it's not actually possible and I already have True Money where I have the same issue. So altogether pointless.

In Ko Phangan they even closed the only FX booth where you could get it and they said in the bank they don’t know when it reopens, “3 months, 6 months, don’t know” as they said 😅

Use true money, at the moment is the best option besides of banks. Can top up 50k and can scan pay even to privates (free 30times a month)

how do you top up True without a bank. Use the payment link and pay with a credit card?

I haven't been able to scan private QR code. Did you need further verification?

@Donna *****
there's a feature to unlock with by sending your dtv visa and stamp on your passport or your Thai driving license

Hmm, I tried that with the DTV, but was rejected,. Which option did you select? Passport with non- immigrant visa? (I'm working on docs for the driving license, but don't have yet....)

@Donna *****
Correct. I also have a phone contract with true mobile, not sure whether that helped or not

Oh, I wonder if it might. I've seen a few people here comment that they could pay personal QR after validating with DTV, so maybe that's the case. (As you would already be verified with your passport, I suppose.) Anyway, I've tried again. 🤞🏼

That’s how they make their money. Off the x change rate. It’s a horrible system and only works with QR business not personal accounts which most markets and small shops use.

Anonieme deelnemer 141 Good you realise they have to make money. However you pay, somewhere has to be money in it for the provider of the service, no matter which service you use. Only the way you are charged might be different.

When you use a free service of the bank, that service has to be paid somehow.

That also might be a reason banks want to close inprofitable accounts.

lol and I was responding the the OP about the major downfall of the card. But thanks for the clarification.

Convenient accessibility for this product was always an issue. I had forgotten or thought there were alternative ways to top up other than foreign currency notes directly.

So, I just reread through this voluminous product ad page to find 3 little words "exchange your money" buried in the very last paragraph, giving the tiniest clue as to how it actually practically gets funded/topped up.

I find it crazy and a little bit scammy. Funny to also see well known influencer's pushing it when it's clearly useless. I spoke with them myself and I asked what happens if for example I sold my motorbike or had a bit of Thai baht I needed to put on it. You must change to a foreign currency first, then change back to THB via the card 🤔🤔. Madness, the only winner here is Kasikorn.

Moreta I came back to try few weeks ago works great for what it can do. QR works almost everywhere except street food and small family run shops. Will work soon with personal QR too soon
