What are the options for moving a tourist visa stamp to a new passport in Thailand?

Here’s a fun one..

- I’m in Vietnam

- Came to get a tourist visa (which I got)

- My (american) passport has water damage and I was refused my flight back to thailand

- I’m getting an emergency passport that will get me to Thailand

My plan is to enter on an exempt using the emergency passport.

What are my options with the tourist visa stamp? It was issued after the damage and is clean. Is it something I can get moved to the new passport, once I’m in the kingdom?

If so, where would I go (in Chiangmai) and what’s the procedure?

* Update *

I'm writing this from a comfy spot in Chiangmai. Here's what I can share and know to be true (based off my experience).

- American emergency passports are valid for 1 year and can get you in, out, and around most places (apparently different depending on the passport)

- There is no changing of visa's at the airport, or need to

- I showed both passports, explained the situation, they stamped the emergency with 2 months (technically only got 59 days but whatever), and the TR in the old/void passport as used

- No fuss, no drawn out process, the IO called over to someone, and the person was able to give instruction without coming over or seeing the passports

- I'll need to show both passports when asked for the duration of my stay and upon exit

- People in these groups will say whatever comes to mind, whether it seems true, is true, is valid, or relevant

- People want to be helpful, even if most have no idea what they're talking about, are going off old information, or it's literally here-say and antidotal

- Most can't be bothered or won't take the time to actually read what's actually being asked

- Thick skin and discernment is required if you're to get any real insight or guidance here

That is all. Thanks everyone 🌿

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual in this post faced complications with a damaged American passport while attempting to return to Thailand from Vietnam. They obtained an emergency passport and successfully entered Thailand using both their emergency passport and the visa from their damaged passport. The process was straightforward, involving showing both passports and receiving a 60-day stamp on the new passport. They advise that, despite conflicting advice from others regarding emergency passport restrictions and visa transfers, presenting both passports clearly to immigration can be effective.

Hi Justin — Although our circumstances are different (I am currently on a University ED Visa studying the Thai Language) I experienced a similar situation about a month ago. My USA passport had water damage and I came into Thailand only with my new USA passport (no stamps). I was back home in the USA when mine was damaged and the government was unfortunately unable to return my damaged passport. **Technically from what I understood when talking to the officer it is required you to transfer old stamps in Thailand before traveling/coming back in through an airport. However, I did have photos of all of my old passport stamps & also was able to explain the situation in Thai.

They were able to give me a temporary stamp at the airport & transfer my old ED Visa stamp at immigration the next day!

So if you are able to keep your old passport and explain the situation, you’ll maybe be okay!

Why not try to go through immigration with your damaged passport first? If you get it stamped you can transfer them to a new passport in Thailand

@Patrik ********
you can NOT transfer visas !!

at Immigration show BOTH US passports and they will stamp you in on ur NEW emergency passport

using the visa in ur cancelled passport>

60 days

NO problem

I’m thinking you can only use the emergency travel document to go home good luck if you have time I’d get a new passport in Saigon

That isn't true for US emergency passports.

ok I guess if they let you on the plane your good to go apply for a new passport as soon as you get here it could take 5 weeks

You should move before you travel. Once you enter it will be valid the visa you used to enter. The other visa will be lost
Lisa ********************
I think you can show the old passport stamp to Immigration when you land.

For usa you get 1 yr validity passport, u can travel to thailand on visa waiver, allowed for 30 days and u can extend another 30 days

There is no way to transfer visa to other passport, use visa waiver to get into the country

Hi
@Jus***
not sure about your current question however can I ask for you TR visa did you have a air ticket out of Thailand or bus ect? Within 60days or 90days? I've been told a bus ticket was ok from HCMC but not confident it will work once there. Did you experience any major problems applying? Thanks

I got mine from Hanoi, and had no issues because I provided Exactly what is currently listed on their website, which was a flight To Thailand, and a Return ticket to Vietnam, along with a stack of paper that was 6 months of statements. I would imagine HCM would ask the same, and would recommend looking at their website instead of here-say. Best of luck 🌿

@Donna ******
unless you have been in and out regularly in recent times in Thailand you are very unlikely to be asked for an exit ticket. I wouldn't stress too much be it it's something to keep in mind. Depending on what airline you're flying on may depend on if you are required one to fly but again it's less chance you'll have to worry

Corrupt immigration officers at HCM Airport. I had a worse experience... Best of luck!🤞🏼

You can't switch to a tourist visa from a visa exempt inside the country. I'd try explaining to immigration on entry showing them both the original and emergency passports and see if they'll stamp you in according to the visa.

thanks for this. I’m aware I can’t switch in country. I’m more curious (hoping) I can get it moved to another passport (either the emergency or the replacement I’ll apply for in cm). Ideally they’ll let me use the TV upon arrival. Let’s see what airport immigration says..
John **********
@Justin ****
I doubt they would let you switch a visa from your old passport to the emergency one as you would already be stamped in on the emergency one

I'm sorry for the responses you received. I asked a simple question in this group and received about 4 useful responses out of the group. Send a picture of yourself after you go through immigration. I will be joining you tomorrow from the Philippines using my emergency United States passport I received at the embassy in Manila yesterday. I will gladly post a picture of me in Bangkok tomorrow afternoon.

While I appreciate being earnestly told emergency passports can only be used to return home (which is clearly not true in all cases or countries as I’m currently on board), it would be great if my actual question could be answered 😅

Is it possible to stay in Vietnam and get a new passport? Took like two weeks when I applied.

Australian emergency passport, you're only allowed to fly directly to your home country.
Joaquina ****************
With an emergency passport you can only travel to your country.

America gives 1 yr validity passport, don’t have to fly back, not sure why other countries follow this so that passengers don’t have to fly back

Where was your concern when I posted a simple question about my passport photo having blue spots on it and everyone just roasted me and offered no help?

her information is incorrect and she's sharing incorrect information so it might as well be a lie.

I'm American, and I entered Thailand from Hong Kong with my emergency U.S. passport with no problems. I did not go to my home country. Should be fine, my emergency passport was fully accepted at immigration, airlines, hotels, etc. Carried the previous one along with it, but nobody ever had a problem with the emergency passport.
