Anyone have negative issues with the motorcycle taxis in front of Mo Chit bus station? It had just finished raining and I asked to get a ride to the nearest MRT station. They said 150 baht. I politely said no thank you and they literally yelled at me to go away! Nice group of guys.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around negative experiences with motorcycle taxis at Mo Chit bus station following a rainstorm, where users reported being overcharged, facing rude behavior from drivers, and general frustration with a lack of standardized pricing. Several users shared that they were quoted much higher fares than the typical price, leading to price negotiations and negative interactions. Others advised using rideshare apps like Grab or Bolt instead for more reliable service and pricing. Overall, the comments reflect a common challenge facing both expats and tourists in navigating transportation costs and attitudes in Thailand.

My mates driver last week not good my mate wasn’t as injured but still nasty road rash and cuts be careful can happen to anyone..I have a car and a bike here very rarely use the bike even tho I’ve had bikes in uk 40 years ………

The motorcycle drivers here are like natural daredevils. I see them miss buses by an inch all the time. The way they are allowed to zip in-between traffic is nuts.
Yhadnapa ***************
the problem is some bike taxi when they see foreigners, they just wanna make some extra cash. tbh just order grab bike and get it over with. normal bike taxi sometimes is just too much

So happy to see the 'take back the streets' attitude here on this thread. Not putting up with all the BS here. Great! Personally I love to see this....

I use GRAB almost 100% of the time. If I need to go somewhere I check the app first and it almost always beats the prices the taxi bike drivers give me. It's also much safer because you have the drivers info, and your location is logged, and you don't have to use your phone to give them directions. They know the price they accepted so normally no issues. Just double check the license plate.
Marc *********
@Corey ******
exactly or, if you do use a bike make sure to check the price with thai people. In lumpini to get where i need to go is 20 baht, i know it they know i know it. I take it out give it first then get on…

Same ride distance on sukhumvit will cost me 60-100 … bikes qre scams and tuktuk even more. They’ll charge 200 baht no matter where you’re going … at that price might as well book a grab taxi

You can even walk to the nearest MRT station. Should be not more than 60 Baht for motorcycle taxi.

I always ALWAYS get off the bus before we get to any station and grab a bike/cab from there. Need to arrange this with the driver to make sure he understands. Won’t work with checked bag only carry on so plan ahead. Re Mo Chit there are plenty of places south of there around the park to get a bike/cab.

Thais will get what ever they can, because they can. Don’t forget save their face, show dignity and calm and make a better offer. Be prepared with bills from .20-100tb. A thousand reserved for stores and shops . Learn their value asap. Lesson learned. Complaining to them will make things worse. Read on google, “what is save face in Thailand “, you will have a better idea how to communicate and not get ripped off.

I usually argue with them on price they hate me for the ride then give them the full price just for the crack 🙏🏻
Frankie-Anthony **********
There's no farang price.

There's no Thai price.

There's only honest and dishonest price.

If their mentality is to charge high because you are a westerner you can always offer them lower than the honest price because they're Thai.

Same thinking process...

Just be careful out there and choose your battles wisely. I heard about a taxi driver taking an American where he wanted to go but then the driver asked for more money and they fought. The driver ended up killing the guy with a machete or sword. And he only wanted like one extra US dollar. It's not worth the fight sometimes.
Randy ********
@Mark *******
that is true, pick your battles. But from my experience, those taxi drivers are pretty docile when they are alone. It’s when they’re around other drivers and their friends when they seem to puff out their chest.
Mark ********
@Randy *******
I have also heard never assume you can fight one Thai guy that seems weak because they protect each other. So if you fight one, others will come help him. This is different from America where people just video record the fight and nobody helps. 😛
Randy ********
@Mark *******
that is very true. They don’t fight fair, that’s for damn sure. I’ve seen my fare share of taxi drivers fights. And 99% of the time others jump in. Fighting one shouldn’t be a problem. It’s the other 5 with sticks, bottles, knives etc that you have to worry about. I just try and keep a smile on my face and either tell them no or take their ride.
Marc *******
Mo Chit is a Bad Dream for Taxis.
Us *****
These Thai guys have a husler mentality instead of a hussle mentality. This is why they will always remain where they are in life. I spoke Thai to the motorcycle driver and told him to drive me to the MRT for 50 baht and told him it is only 5 min. He wanted 100, then 80, but i was firm with 50 because that is their price. I walked away eventually and gave the taxi driver 100 baht to take me home lol. It is not about the money but getting ripped off. Even with the taxi friver he wanted 200 at first but he finally gave in to my original offer of 100 because he knew he wouldn lose out on an opportunity of income. These bike drivers just want to hang out with their friends, thehy don't want to work.
George *********
@Us ****
That's the way to do it. I would do exactly the same
Randy ********
@Us ****
bang on!!! Exactly!! They don’t want to work. That’s the reason they give such an out of this world price. But, they will do the work for the crazy price. Trust me, there are a lot of people I’ve seen just say ok and they pay the price. Either they don’t know or don’t care. Up to them!
Us *****
@Randy *******
I can easily afford to pay their outlandish price but I don't like to get ripped off. Not going to drive up inflation for everyone. Takes one dumb farang to pay the price and they will do it to all the farangs.
Randy ********
@Us ****
you don’t need to try and school me on how it works. I’ve been here long enough to understand the way of the land. I maybe married, doesn’t mean out of touch with the goings on. I still enjoy the life here.
Mark ********
@Randy *******
That's the other thing that gets to me. Too many Thai people assume all westerners are wealthy and have disposable income to share. I am a US Navy veteran and have always struggled with making money. I barely have enough for myself but I am seen as an American who should share his wealth...wealth I don't have. They don't understand that the cost of living where we come from is also higher so it's not that different than here. We make more but we have to spend more too.
Randy ********
@Mark *******
man, I hear ya!!! I’m by far a rich person. But I can make my life here in Thailand much easier then I can back home, Canada. The western world is way to expensive these days. My wife and I live ok here. I don’t work here, wish I could because of boredom. My wife goes to work everyday while I do my thing at home. The thais have a miscommunication that all farang are rich. No!! I’m happy and I can have a better life here then back home.
Mark ********
@Us ****
Yes, I have never understood this about these types of drivers and restaurant owners in Asia. They trick foreigners into paying more and if they do this, then word-of-mouth will spread and they will lose business. It's better to get many small sells than one big sell. They do not understand this.
Dale *******

Absolutely the worse taxi guys, after Phuket of coarse. I was there with my wife and her cousin after a trip back from Roi Et. They would not stop harassing us to take a taxi. All they did was assume we wanted to go to Pattaya. They can be aggressive until you say something back to them. It’s funny listening to them speak as they assume I don’t speak or understand Thai. Needless to say, once I spoke up they backed off.

How long did it take you to get a good grasp of thai? It drives me nuts. After 2 years it still sounds like just a lot of fast noises instead of words.
James **************
@Mark *******
the fast noises are indeed Thai words. You just have to substitute them for the correct slow noises in ENGLISH! 5555
Mark ********
@James *************
I think my wife is also a fast talker too, which is worse. I hear others speaking Thai and its so calm and clear. My wife talks excitingly.
Randy ********
@Mark *******
it’s not an easy language to learn. I’m still not where I want to be. I’ve been coming to Thailand for 10+ years. I’ve been married for almost 7. I was always spending a month here and there during the year. I’ve now been here a year straight. I find being here, listening and watching TV helps a lot. I still can’t get the pronunciations down 100%.

YouTube and Facebook have been a help as well. I was signed up for Thai language class but I had to exit as I had a family emergency back home. My next step is doing classroom learning. I personally think that is the best way to learn Thai.
Mark ********
@Randy *******
Exactly. I feel like it takes major dedication and time to learn it. And my wife and I have been dealing with the stress of sorting out our separate lives, trying to make it one, while also dealing with family health issues. And I have little energy to focus on learning a new language. I just pick up a sentence here and there. Hopefully one day it sticks. But I listen to my wife speak thai for an hour or more on the phone and it just drives me insane. It's like hearing crazy noises that make no sense to me for a solid hour. 😅
Randy ********
@Mark *******
sounds like we have a lot in common. But when I listen to my wife talk, I try and pick up on certain words. Then I try and piece it together. I’ll ask her about something and she’ll break it down for me. If I remember, good. If I forget, oh well lol.

I don’t have the dedication either man. I have so much free time most days, I should be fluent by now. I would rather go for a walk and go to the gym.

I’ve listened to podcasts etc as well. I try repeating what’s said, then again, it’s hard to have the pronunciation 100% that way too. If you’re somewhat serious about it, it’ll come to you. Spending time here helps a lot.
Mark ********
Many motorcycles piss me off in Bangkok; not for prices but for their driving. I've had many get way too close to me when I am walking as far away from the street as possible. I almost slapped the helmet of one driver from reflex because he sped an inch past my leg. And they will drive right into you in parking lots too. They seem to not care if they hit you or not. They leave it up to you to move or get hit.
Steve **********
Kool *******
It's been like this for many many years. You walk out to the street to flag down honest drivers, both cabs and motorcycle taxi drivers.

ahh, I misread your post. I missed the motorcycle taxi. I just saw taxi. A regular taxi, from the street flagged down, is just bt40 from MoChit to the MRT/BTS at chatuchak. I've never used a motorcycle taxi from there, only a regular taxi because it is so cheap to the Chatuchak BTS/MRT stations.

it was a group of them. They were on the younger side. Around Rama 9 all of the motorcycle taxis have been very nice and even courteous. It’s just at Mo Chit leaving the bus station that I have been getting price gouged and the bad attitude. The week before an older motorcycle taxi wanted 180 baht. I laughed, smiled and talked him down to 60. He took me to the MRT and then demanded an extra 20 as a tip. In return he gave me a hateful look.
