What are the best long-term visa options for a Canadian citizen over 50 wishing to stay in Thailand?

Hello all, I would like to get your help in order to decide what should be my next steps.

I am a Canadian citizen (normally visa exempt).

I am currently in Canada.

I am looking at the at the best strategy to get in Thailand for long term stay.

I am over 50 and have financial means but I do not want to go Elite visa.

I already have a non-resident bank account with Krungsri and can easily transfer 800,000 THB.

I understand that whatever I do, I will have to to undergo a 14-day quarantine at a hospital or certified alternative state quarantine (ASQ) hotel upon my arrival.

My question(s):

1- Should I simply ask for the special tourist visa (STV) that allows foreign visitors to stay in the country for 90 days, extendable up to 270 days and see from there?

2- Should I ask for a Non-Immigrant Visa, O-X 10 Years Long Stay ? (What is the difference, advantages and inconvenients compared to Non-Immigrant Visa, O-A ???

3- Should I look for a job, an get in as a Software Engineer under a Non-Immigrant Visa Category EX

4- Once inside Thailand, is it possible to convert a visa into another? If I enter under a retirement visa, can I find a job and obtain a work visa (without exiting the country). Or in reverse, could I enter under STV and ask for retirement visa or a work visa?

Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian citizen seeks advice on long-term visa options for staying in Thailand. They can transfer 800,000 THB and prefer not to pursue an Elite visa. The inquirer considers the Special Tourist Visa (STV) for a 90-day stay, extending up to 270 days, versus a Non-Immigrant O-X visa which allows for a 10-year stay. They also contemplate job opportunities under a Non-Immigrant EX visa. Concerns about converting visas while in Thailand and the impact of quarantine measures are raised.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Bern released a document that Non OA and Non OX have been granted entry to Thailand beginning September 29 (today)

They are just taking the piss now. Many people paid immigration to extend their visa. Now they announce another amnesty.

I’ve lived in Thailand for many years and it’s getting harder and harder to stay in Thailand with all the rules and regulations. The government wants you to come and visit spend your money and go back to your country. They will regret that someday.

Well, they are hurting now with tourism at 5% capacity

while I would disagree with the doom and gloom above I agree initially it is a little cumbersome. I have the non O for marriage. First extension was last year. It was a little bit of a pain in the ass but now it’s simple as pie. We exactly what we have to do and we do it. Quite simple actually. Also, everyone at our local immigration are very nice, kind, helpful and even gave tips on how to avoid some BS. Take FB comments with a grain of salt, especially about how bad it is as a foreigner here.

Thanks Steve, I know, I was in BKK and got several extensions on my visa exempt entry. It is not as bad as some like to depict it.

There is another option if you have the money, and it will take working with the Thai embassy closely. There is the little known Investment Visa/extension, not the Elite visa. It takes investment of at least bt10million into approved Thai financial instruments, like government bonds, blue chip stocks, like any the Royal Property bureau owns, and other items, if not your own established company stock. If you decide to leave Thailand, you can cash out, and could make a profit. It also gives you the opportunity to own 1 Rai of land in certain gated developments, that must be sold if you leave. It is the best visa/extension, but expensive initially

woah, that sounds great, where can I find more about this ?

, contact the Thai embassy, and ask them specifically about the "investment visa", type IM, not any other visa, as you want to invest in Thailand financial securities/government bonds. I would not go the condo route, as you can loose money, but Thai bonds are pretty safe.

, no, the investment visa is a whole different visa, and has nothing to do with the smart visa. It is a type IM visa.

STV is not yet finalized; best to wait until it is.
