Hi everyone, need recommendations on best money transfer for Australian dollars (AUD) to Thai baht THB):

I recently got a long-term visa and want to transfer about 10k to 30k AUD (from my Australian bank account) to Thai Baht (to my Thai bank account).

I'm using Wise right now, but does anyone know if there is a better alternative to get a better exchange rate?

Wise is the go.

Stick with Wise,it's the best overall option

Do you know any Thais in Australia? I'd so, many Thais in Australia want AUD. I exchanged AUD with a Thai contact in Australia at the spot rate and they transferred the THB into my bank account in Thailand.

I use Own Money

Wise uses mid bank rate and are excellent to deal with.

@Youssef *****
wise is best for me

My friend mentioned when he was back in Australia, he just went into the commonwealth and transferred $40k. Only cost him $30. Also had to be reported to gov cause over $10 k. But you have to do that on all transfers over $10 k in Oz anyway.

the commbank exchange rate would be horrible. You can get it exchanged at your local Thai bank and negotiate a rate with the manager beforehand, but I don't know if it's worthwhile on a small transaction

@Alistair *********
yeah not sure about that, probably I think he was locked out of his wise account and had to get it happening quick.

I registered for Wise but was turned off using it by the number of comments I read about people having their accounts frozen. I use Bahtsmart for smaller transactions Australia to Thailand. Not as good a rate but the money arrives within an hour and there is no prospect of being locked out of your account. One day I will try Wise when a delay or non arrival of funds is not an issue.

I love Wise and have used it for years with no issues.

@Sam ****
but 40,000 at a less than the going exchange rate can be very expensive, some banks you get 1 baht less

How do so many people hear "krub"?

Must be something wrong with my hearing...
Brandon ************
@Jae ******
different dialects and different emphasis. You drop the r to be more informal to people you know. But if you want to be formal you enunciate strictly to the spelling.

Krub for men say , Kha for women say all polite

Yes, understand the difference

there's ways words are meant to be pronounced and then there's how it actually sounds when spoken. It's part of why foreigners often don't sound natural when they speak thai

@Alistair *********
I still struggle with getting the tone right, I must admit.
David ********
Jae Brett it's not just tone - the vowel and consonant sounds in Thai are different than the sounds in western languages. They are formed in different parts of the mouth. I don't speak Thai but I believe that people should not use western letters to learn Thai - they should learn the Thai written language first and learn the Thai sounds for the Thai "alphabet". Also the learn Thai with Thai method looks seems interesting. (Note I learned this from Stuart Jay Raj both from his online "lectures" and his book about learning the Thai language.

Wise is still the one. But currency exchange is gonna hurt no matter what
Richard *********
for that much i'd be willing to bet use ur banks swift to transfer to ur thai bank
Tony ************
Wise, is the quickest easiest and cheapest.
Keith *******
Overall with fees, exchange rate and service Wise cannot be beaten, the question you asked about the exchange rate then wise is top as you virtually get the full going rate, maybe the fees are slightly higher though but not by much.

@Keith ******
This, I am unable to find any better either.👍

I use Wise. Check to see if your Australian bank has a daily transfer limit. My ANZ has a daily transfer limit of $10,000
James ************
Unless you're with a certain bank. 50k baht a day is the max with wise. I forget which bank though.
Gino *********
Brandon ************
@James ***********
SCB, Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn. And it's 50,000 per transfer not per day.
James ************
@Brandon ***********
meant to reply to the other guy lol.
James ************
I've seen that warning before. But I was told some banks only allow 50k
James ************
@Brandon ***********
I tried a couple weeks ago. And it only allowed me to do 50k. I tried doing 90k and it wouldn't let me. But I sent 49k then the rest later no problem.
Brandon ************
There's many options. Some will offer a little better exchange rate but not much. And many are less clear about the fees than Wise. So you might transfer but not quite sure about the exact amount that will arrive which Wise tells you up front.

I don't know about other currencies but Wise has a comparison tool for USD.

Also Wise was a lot faster than when I tried MoneyGram which took almost a week.
Garrett ***********
Does wise have a bad exchange rate?
Keith ************
@Garrett **********
no, they don't have a high exchange rate. They use the mid-market exchange rate.
Garrett ***********
@Keith ***********
Exchange rate is exactly what the Google rate is.
