TLDR : Answer Summary
The choice between a Multiple Re-Entry Permit and a Single Entry Permit for those holding Retirement or Non O Visas in Thailand depends largely on travel frequency. A Multiple Re-Entry Permit (costing ฿3800) is beneficial for individuals planning to leave Thailand multiple times within a year, as it offers convenience and a cost-effective option if traveling more than four times, compared to single permits (฿1000 each). Many expats prefer the Multiple option for peace of mind and to avoid administrative tasks at the airport, while others may opt for Single Entry Permits when travel plans are infrequent. Ultimately, personal travel habits and budget considerations influence the decision.

As Tod knows, as a ten year retirement visa holder in Thailand, I did single entry then did multiple once and didn’t accurately remember the renewal date and left the country without a permit. I’ve fine though a hellish half year to get my new visa.

So multiple entry is the safe bet. Used to have a big sign for re entry permits at BKK airport and now I believe it’s at a separate entrance. Anyway that was all on me but I will never ever get a single entry again.

If you never travel multiple times per year then sure get the single. But international travel involves juggling lots of tasks and so I’ll stay on the safe side.

Thanks for the informative thread.

Of course that was a no-brainer to get multiple entry. I travel back to the US 3 times a year plus multiple trips throughout Southeast Asia.

Derek - the common answer (and Ive been guilty of this) assumes that the future looks like the past. But in real life sometimes situations arise that you could not have foreseen, and having the insurance of a multi can make a big difference.

Im not a fan of insurance but I've learned this one is worth having.

that is the question indeed 🙂 once/twice might as well just pull single re-entry permits at 1000baht apiece,

more than 3 times get a multiple re-entry for 3800baht 🙂

I just buy a single entry reentry permit when I do my extension, mainly so if I take a last minute trip I don't forget to get one.

Just depends on how much travel outside the country you're doing.

Single entry takes takes 10 minutes on the airport cost 1000'bat. I have ready TM 8 on my computer just change the dates and print not so big problem to take every time when you travel. But if you plan to travel more than 4 times during your visa or extension better multi entry. For each visa or extension need to bay new multi entry.

Never bought one in 10 years. Easy to get at the airport or local immigration.

Let's get the pricing hashed out

ALL immigration offices in the country sell re-entry permits for the same price.

A single re-entry permit is 1000baht

A multiple re-entry permit is 3800 baht

You need copies of the data page of your passport, your most recent entry stamp, your current extension stamp, a filled out TM8 (application for re-entry) and a passport sized photo

You can get them at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang for the same price I just mentioned with the copies/form/photo I mentioned

OR

You can pay 200baht "service charge" give them just your passport without anything else and they'll sell you a single for 1200baht and a multiple for 4000 baht 😛

It all depends on your own circumstances everyone different

In my case I like to travel a lot in and out of the country multiple times a years so it’s very important for me to have multiple entry paid when I get my 12 month

Extension to Stay Visa otherwise know as (Retirement Visa)

Makes my life much easier the less I have to deal with the bureaucracy the better for my stress levels.

But some people are on a strict budget so maybe buying one at a time would suit them.

You can buy a

re- entry visa at the Airport before you leave of course but you must remember otherwise you will be in trouble on your return.

Some people will tell you different but that’s Facebook everyone has a story HaHa 😛

Only my experience

Don’t shoot the messenger

No commission been paid HaHa 😜

But a cold beer be nice 😊

Cheers Irish 🇮🇪 Paul

If you’re going go out of the country four times a year, it’s a slight discount over an individual reentry. ฿3800 vs 1000x4. If you go out more than 4 it is even more of a discount.

💯Less than 4 times a year going out.. just buy a single re-entry permit each time.

although doing that burns almost a half passport page per re-entry permit

noted... most likely cheaper to get the multi - rather than buy a 'new' passport (for pages) 🙏

I get multiple reentry for peace of mind. Sudden trips and surprise trips to the UK, visit other countries one less thing to worry about.

I also think it’s around 75 baht per week, I pay more than that for insurance I haven’t used, and do t need for my extensions. But both give me peace of mind.

If you travel a lot the multi is the only way to go buying singles and traveling a lot takes up a lot of pages in your passport and if your new to international traveling you’ll find saving pages is important

I get one every year with my annual extension just because I'm lazy and it allows me to come and go without needing to stop and get one on the way out.

that's bad info.

ALL re-entry permits at ALL immigration offices are 1000baht for a single re-entry and 3800 baht for a multiple re-entry

and I would BET dollars to durian if you looked at the receipt that you'd see that it was for 1000baht for a single re-entry permit and 3800 baht for a multiple re-entry permit and the officers pocketed the 900 baht for the single and the 700 baht for the multiple they overcharged you

The price is exactly what I'm telling you it is and it's that price at all offices 🙂

At Chaengwattana it's the same TWO completely different counters one for extensions and one for re-entry

but

we don't have the luxury of paying money under the table for someone to go get the re-entry permit for us after we get our extension 🙂

We have to go get a queue, queue up and wait it out like everyone else
