TLDR : Answer Summary
The primary difference between the regular O retirement visa and the multi-entry O visa lies in entry and length of stay. The single-entry O visa allows a 90-day stay, while the multi-entry O visa, valid for a year, permits multiple 90-day stays with mandatory exits and re-entries after each period. Extensions are possible, but both types ultimately require periodic exits from Thailand.

hi your O retirement visa is 90 day (applied in your country)? and then you wish to change it into one year O retirement visa in thailand, right?

@Ken *****
nope that's not how it works ๐Ÿ˜• You get a single entry Non-O visa at a thai consulate, or you buy the 90 day Non-O here, then when that 90 days runs down you apply for a yearly extension of stay. There is no one year O retirement visa sold inside the country.

@Tod ********
thanks a lot for yr prompt reply, so the first step is to get a single entry non O visa at thai consulate, may i know the no.of days allowed for stay for this 'first step' visa?
Tod *********
@Ken *****
you get 90 days on a Non-O visa when you stamp in

As I said you can get a 90 day Non-O visa INSIDE thailand at the immigration office OR buy one at a thai consulate and when you enter you get 90 days

Had non o single entry, completed the 90 days went to immigration at aranya prathet got another 60 day extension, i have to leave the country on sept 30 th, am going to Vietnam for a week then back for 3 weeks

@Francis *******
allow me to clarify: you did not get a 60 days extension for this Single Entry Non-Imm-O visa! You got this extension apparantely for another reason. I guess it could have been a "60-days family visit" or a "Covid19" extension. You cannot get a 60-days extension for a single entry 90-days Non-Imm-O visa other than converting it to a "1-year extension of stay"

@Greg **********
ok, i have a thai son, and they gave me a 60 day visa.

a Non-O visa is a Non-O visa ๐Ÿ˜ฎ the difference is one is a single entry where you get stamped in for 90 days and the other a year-long, multi-entry where you get stamped in for 90 days, then you exit/re-enter the country to get another 90 day stamp and you do that the whole year the visa is valid for A year long, multi-entry Non-O does not let you stay IN country a year, just 90 days at a time

@Tod ********
but you must have a 800.000 baht bank account in a Thai bank in order to do this, right?
Tod *********
@Bjarne ***************
IF you are applying for a 90 day NOn-O visa INSIDE the country at the immigration office you need to have the 800K baht transferred in from abroad into a thai bank account in your name before you apply for the visa
Bjarne ****************
Silly me! You don't have to answer me Greg, I read Tod's reply one more time and it gives me all the information I need ๐Ÿ‘
Greg ***********
@Bjarne ***************
no, you only need the 800,000.-THB in your Thai bank account when you want to change the visa into a "1-year extension of stay permit"
Bjarne ****************
@Greg **********
thank you for your response. Just to get clear about this. If I get the non-O (basic) visa, stay in Thailand for 90 days and leave the Kingdom for a few days, then I will be stamped in for another 90 days when I return?
Tod *********
@Bjarne ***************
nope, that's not how it works ๐Ÿ˜•

INSIDE the country all Non-Immigrant visas are sold as "no entry" <- meaning there is no re-entry permit and that's because you're already IN thailand when you buy it. You apply, wait for the review period (usually 2 weeks) go back they ink in a Non-O visa and give you a new 90 day stamp.

Then when that 90 days runs out you go apply for a yearly extension by meeting the proof of funds. ONCE you get that year extension you could buy a re-entry permit to let you exit/re-enter the country BUT that permit won't add any days to your extension just let you exit and come back with the same expiration date.

NOW OUTSIDE the country a Non-immigrant visa is sold as either a 90 day single entry <- enter the country once for 90 days and that's it OR a year-long multi-entry <- enter the country as much as you want for the year the visa is valid for and each entry gets you stamped in for 90 days at a time.

@Tod ********
thank you so much for clearing this out for me.

I'm in my home country (Denmark) now and about to apply for a retirement non-O for the first time. I have a flight ticket for October 30. I want to stay in Thailand for 6 months, but don't want to deposit 800.000 baht in a Thai bank.

So I must apply for a year-long multi-entry retirement O Visa, which I did'nt know existed. It must have been โ€œout of useโ€ during the covid lock-down period.

@Bjarne ***************
you keep in mind on that year long, multi-entry Non-O visa you only get stamped in for 90 days when you arrive and you MUST exit/re-enter the country every 90 days to get a new 90 day stamp and you do that for the whole year
