A friend has just received his first retirement visa which is multiple entry. He is confused about re-entry permits for a new Visa. He will be exiting Thailand three times or more. Will he require a re-entry permit during his first year on his retirement visa? He has received conflicting reports and is confused. Much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A multiple entry retirement visa generally includes re-entry permits, allowing the holder to exit and re-enter Thailand during the validity of the visa without needing to obtain separate re-entry permits. However, it's essential to confirm the specific type of visa issued, as terminology can vary, and to understand all conditions associated with the visa.

If he has a multiple entry "retirement" visa it has the re-entry permits built into it for the validity of the visa.

Just curious about the visa type (seeing as there is no such thing as a retirement visa ;) ) ; Did he get this visa from a thai consulate in his home country and did it require a medical certificate and a police back ground check?

Yes I agree. People get very confused.....I think it should be referred to as 1. Retirement visa (OA) or 2. Retirement extension (O). Easy terms for people. Anyways you guys are the experts and are great with helping people out. I guess I am just bitter that there are very few options for the under '50's who can't 'retire'.. ;)

@Mic****
, so it is for you okay to use retirement visa. For asking advice about how and what to do, there is a huge difference in a Non O immigrant Visa based on retirement, a Non O-A Immigrant Visa and an Extension Of Stay. So please advice people to use the correct name, it makes answering the correct way of doing things much more easy.

It is commonly referred to as a retirement visa as it is used to stay here based on the fact that you qualify for retirement (age, financials, etc). You can't get if you are 40 for example. So it is safe to use that term as long as you know what the actual class of visa that you need is. Ie Non OA applied outside or O visa which gets extended. Everyone gets up in arms about it...but it is so commonly used that if you go to immigration or visa office and ask for a retirement visa.......they will know exactly what you want. Whether it is the official term or not....it is a retirement visa....

No problem Harri. Every time he come back to Thailand he will get the same date as stamped now on the Extension of Stay. 45 days before that stamped date he must apply for a new 1 year Extension of Stay and a new multiple re entry permit.

Google is not always correct Bob Johnson. Tod Daniels is correct. It is a Non-Immigrant Type O-A with a 1 year extension based on retirement. The 1 year extension is renewable yearly.

No such thing as retirement visa? Google states otherwise

This was obtained all within Thailand

1. a Non-O-Retirement

2. Retirement Visa with extension to stay

3. NON-IMM Multiple Re-Entry Permit

Looks like he has everything in order but was just confused. Sorry about the post. Just trying to help him out.

The reason I ask is the visa you get that requires a medical cert and background check is a Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa. It's good for unlimited entries into the country for the validity of the visa itself and each entry gets the person stamped in for an entirely new calendar year.
