TLDR : Answer Summary
When granted a Non-O visa from within Thailand, you must obtain a re-entry permit to leave and return without voiding your visa. A single entry permit costs THB 1,000, while a multiple entry permit costs THB 3,800.

When you get a type O visa, also get a re-entry permit allowing you to leave and come back on the same visa/extension. Single entry is bt1000, and multi-entry is bt3800. If you don't have one then your type O visa is void as soon as you leave Thailand.
