Hello I'd really appreciate some advice on Visa options please

I have been teaching at a school in Mahasarakham the past couple of years so on an a NonB visa with work permit

Me and my partner (Thai national) had planned to get married around March time this year and we had hoped to travel to England together for the summer, but becuase of Covid we have had to put these plans on hold

With schools being mainly online teaching all this year I've been feeling pretty burntout and I've already notified my agency I won't be renewing my contract, so this current contract will end October 15th and my Visa will end November 20th

I'm wondering if I am able to switch to a 60 day tourist visa in country form a NonB visa and then I could extend this for another 30 days?

The other option is that we could do the marriage registration early and do the ceromony later next year but I'd rather have more time on this, plus I won't be able to travel to Bangkok until at least my teaching contract ends to get the affidavit and passport transalation etc so I think it will be a rush to get everthing ready to obtain the marriage visa in this time

Thanks in advance I've always found this page very helpful in the past!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on visa options after their Non-B visa ends due to the expiration of their teaching contract. They are interested in switching to a 60-day tourist visa in Thailand and extending it for an additional 30 days, but they are also considering marrying their Thai partner for a marriage visa. Community comments clarify that once the teaching contract ends, the visa will also cease, and the only way to secure legal stay will be through marriage registration or other extensions.

Just to reiterate in case you missed when Benjamin said it, but under your current circumstances your reason for staying in Thailand ends on October 15th even if your extension was until November 20th. Your extension ends the moment your reason for getting it does, so when your contract ends so does your legal ability to be in Thailand. You need to have everything figured out by October, not November.

thanks for the heads up but I work for an agency and the consultants that sort out the visa and work permit will always allow teachers to travel and enjoy Thailand after the contract finishes up until the last day of the visa/work permit, never had a problem with that before

There is no tourist visa or extension you can get in-country from extension based on employment/teaching. Other than 1 year extension being married to a Thai national, the possible option would be

1. a 7days to leave period after you apply for an extension for whatever reason which would get not approved.

2. 60days visiting family extension if you get married legally before that date. this doesn't require much like 1 year extension based on marriage to a Thai national.

Just a heads up, the OP is a female, marrying a Thai male 😮 . I'd skip the 60 day extension of stay and just go straight to a one year extension of stay based on marriage.

i understand.

Still 60days extension is much easier and less documents than 1 year extension even for a foreign female.

I don't quite understand the 60 day extension? so I can go to my local immigration once my current visa is coming to an end and extend for 60 days and say that I am visiting friends/family in the country? I do have a cousin in the country

, your understanding is roughly right, but it has to be a "Thai" family, not a friend or foreign family.

I never heard of anyone getting approved for a 60 day extension of stay based on visiting Thai family who was NOT directly related either by (formal) marriage or directly by blood (like a child or a father). In-laws don't count to my knowledge. And the marriage must be legal (not the Buddhist ceremony)

ok good to know, I think the hardest part is going to be getting the documents required for the marriage registration which will mean a trip to Bangkok so once that is done I don't mind the extra paperwork that needs to be done for the 1 year extension 👍

right, that's why I mentioned the 'proof'.

ah ok thanks I have plenty of Thai family here too ☺️

@Gráinne *******
which you need to prove relationship to apply for 60days visiting a Thai family extension. usually marriage cert, birth cert, etc. (not that much like docs for 1 year extension based on marriage to a thai national.)

>I'm wondering if I am able to switch to a 60 day tourist visa in country form a NonB visa and then I could extend this for another 30 days?

*ASSUMING* everything stays the same, on October 15th, by 11:59 PM, you will have to leave Thailand OR, if you're legally married, get a one year extension of stay based on marriage.

>The other option is that we could do the marriage registration early

That would be the only option to stay. [EDIT WITH NEW INFORMATION]. You are a female marrying a male Thai national. Get the marriage documents, and be formally married. You can then get a one year extension of stay based on marriage to a MALE Thai national without any proof of finances.

thanks for this information but as I am a female I don't think there are any financial requirements for the extension of stay based on marriage?

>s I am a female I don't think there are any financial requirements for the extension of stay based on marriage?

I'm assuming you're a female foreigner, marrying a male Thai. If that's true, then there is NO financial requirement. Sorry for the confusion. I'll edit my comment.
