Next question: flying to Penang next week for a visa run. Iโ€™ll be getting a 60 day tourist visa (for now) which I plan to extend and then probably will get another visa later.

For the hotel booking, can I bring my rental agreement that shows my commitment to stay until December? Is that a bad idea? After all, the implication in getting a tourist visa is that I only plan to stay 60 or 90 days. Would bringing them a copy of a rental agreement that shows until December actually hurt me?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about bringing a rental agreement for their stay in Thailand while applying for a 60-day tourist visa in Penang. They question whether this might negatively impact their application, as it implies a longer stay than the intended 60 or 90 days. Community responses suggest varying views, with some stating that having proof of a current address like a rental agreement could satisfy consulate requirements, while others warn it could raise suspicions about the user's intentions. Additionally, there are comments discussing the importance of providing a 'paid confirmation' for hotel bookings when applying for the visa.

Don't go to Penang if you don't want to book a hotel. Go to another consulate.

I dont know about Penang but some consulates just want proof of an address in Thailand and a rental agreement usually covers this.

Anyways that's just my opinion

You are showing that you want to stay 90 days but lo and behold your apartment is till December! That means there is a reason you paid for it for so long

booking.com - find something with free cancellation, book it, print the confirmation, cancel it. No hassle.

@Jo ******
that's the rules if you want a visa there. I've posted the requirements below.

Ron - because most places I've stayed don't take advance bookings and so that forces you to take somewhere more expensive. It just surprised me, that's all!
Ron *******
Why is it nuts? Your supposed to be staying where your booked, not attempt to cheat the system just get a visa. That's why they have done it....and introduced a black list system in Penang if your caught with fake documents.
Jo *******
That's nuts! Most (cheap) hostels don't want / take payment in advance. Maybe it's just that Embassy?

I did it with Yangon and pretty sure friends did it with KL without the 'paid' bit.
Ron *******
They want to see a 'Paid confirmation'.

if I was the immigration officer it would sound dodgy

The visa is issued by Consulate staff not immigration officers
