Do I need to show a flight out of Thailand for my upcoming visa run and tourist visa application?

Hi, just have a question about my upcoming visa run. I'm flying to Penang tomorrow and will go to the embassy the next day. I don't have a flight out of Thailand but I have everything else here. I'm applying for a single entry tourist visa but plan to extend for another 30 days after the 60 days is up. After that, I hope to do another visa run at a different embassy and do the same. My lease agreement in Chiang Mai is until September 29th. I'm currently on a non b visa that is expiring April 30th because I was just working in Thailand for 1.5 years.

Do I still need to show a flight out of Thailand before the 60 days is up? I'm not sure since I have to fill in 'duration of proposed stay' on the visa application form and I was going to put 4.5 months (until my lease is up)

Thank you for any answers you may have! Hoping this visa run works out! 😬🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is preparing for a visa run to Penang to apply for a single entry tourist visa, seeking clarity on whether proof of onward travel is required, given their current residency situation and upcoming lease expiration. Commenters emphasize the importance of showing proof of onward travel within the visa's duration, regardless of the lease agreement. They also discuss the necessity of cancelling the previous work permit and extension related to the user's Non B visa before leaving Thailand.

When you stopped working you were supposed to go cancel the work permit, take that receipt and your termination paperwork to the immigration office to cancel your extension of stay. That is how the process works.

What could or will happen if you don't follow the procedure has been explained.

The fact that you will need proof of onward travel in Penang dated between 60 and 90 days from the day you're applying for the visa (no matter what your lease says) was also covered.

It seems like we're just going round and round with the answers. So I'd say we're done.

Good Luck (y)

So, realistically, is everyone saying this...

Amanda has the WP and is ok as her work says she is still working.

She needs to cancel before leaving and cancel the extension. End up with no visa at this point?

Leaves the country tomorrow...with no visa?

Then applies once outside the country for a 60day Tourist?

It is your own responsibility to follow the rules of the work permit and Immigration. You know the official way now how to handle, and you can read what happened to another person who got denied exit for not following the rules. It is in the hands of the Immigration Officer at the airport to make this decision.

, now you're asking questions no one can answer, that's gonna be totally up to the immigration officer.

It seems there is a big chance they don't let me leave the country tomorrow then? I'm flying out of Don Mueang if that helps. Will they definitely ask me if I'm still working?

unfortunately I don't have time to cancel both since my flight to Penang is tomorrow morning. I'm in Kanchanaburi now and am heading to Bangkok just before 3pm. My flight to Penang is tomorrow at 10:50 am

There are two options. You cancel the WP and with the papers from Ministry of Labor you cancel the Extension of Stay based on working. Than option 1, leave the country same day or option 2, apply for new Extension of Stay if you do not meet any requirements it will be denied and you get 7 days Extension of Stay to leave the country.

All I'm doing is telling what the real process is, whether you follow it or not is on you. ;) Many many people have thought the same way you did and were caught out either not being able to leave the country and being fined for overstay because they didn't cancel their extension the day they stopped working.

I want to follow it as I would hate to not be able to leave the country tomorrow. I'm just confused because my agency gave me the wrong information but I know that is common here. Can I cancel it in Kanchanaburi if I rush to immigration now? It was issued in Phayao. I also still have a valid work permit so couldn't I say I am still working? If they ask..

I believe you are given 7 days to leave once cancelled. If you try to leave without cancelling it, they may not let you exit the country (happened to a friend of mine).

it is NOT an automatic thing to get the 7 days to get out of thailand (extension denied) stamp.

@Ama***
, the process if you are on an extension of stay is that you go cancel your work permit, you go cancel the extension and THEN leave the country.

, assuming you get out of the country, nothing, you'll get the visa because thai consulates are run by the ministry of foreign affairs NOT immigrations

However if you go to the immigration office for anything once you come back they'll see that you didn't cancel your earlier extension and charge you for overstay.

they are wrong, and you should go cancel your work permit AND your extension. If you can't exit the country the day you cancel the extension you can get a 7 day extension denied stamp to get out of thailand in a week for 1900baht.

My agency / school didn't cancel the work permit. The agency said I would be fine if I left the country before April 30th but didn't mention that I should cancel it myself...

Also if you were on a Non-B extension <- that you got from the immigration office you need to make sure that you cancel it too.

What happens if I don't cancel it? I thought it would just expire April 30th and I'm leaving Thailand April 25-30

The school didn't cancel my attached work permit and I still have it. It expires April 30th too. Would I have to cancel the extension at the same place I got it? Doesn't that mean Id have to leave the country immediately after cancelling?

doesn't matter what the lease says, you're going to need proof of onward travel within the duration of the visa you're applying for (60 days plus a 30 day extension equals 90 days)
