Do I need an outbound ticket for a 60-day tourist visa to Thailand from Penang?

Going to Penang for a 60 day tourist visa. This is my first time there, and I’ve heard they’re strict. A couple of questions:

- do I really need a ticket out of Thailand? I didn’t need it in Vientiane. If so, does anyone know of a super cheap airfare or service that refunds tickets?

- how much should I bring in cash for transactions? Should I bring Baht?

- how much should I have in the bank?

Any advice would be appreciated, since this is my first time in Penang.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking advice on obtaining a 60-day tourist visa to Thailand from Penang, particularly regarding the need for an outbound flight ticket, suggested cash amounts for transactions, and bank balance requirements. Several comments highlight the necessity of having a ticket out of Thailand for visa processing, with suggestions to purchase inexpensive flights through platforms like Skyscanner. There are also mentions of the importance of accommodation proof and maintaining recent bank statements for the visa application. The conversation emphasizes varying consulate requirements in different locations.

Okay, let's keep in mind that consulates (run under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office) have a LOT of latitude as far as what requirements they want to issue visas. This is what your experience at one consulate has no relevance in what is required at another consulate (even another one in the same country).

Here’s another question. For proof of hotel booking, can I just bring the rental agreement I signed for the condo I’m living in?

I wonder on the other hand, if you show a 12 month lease on a Condo, they may say your not a Tourist? The accomodation advice seems to strictly mention hotels only for Tourist visas? I think there are 2 advisorys. One for Tourist visas and another for other visas but part of it applies too tourist visas as well.
Ron *******
Looking at the requirements above, i would guess so. You may or may not need a signed copy of your landlords ID for verification. May not hurt to have it i guess.

Check the accomodation requirements.

True or not, these are there requirements. If you want a Visa, I advice to follow their rules.

, not true. You will definitely need an outward ticket

Let's keep in mind Malaysia is a Muslim country and they are probably tired of all these sex pats from pattaya doing dubious visa runs!

you just contradicted yourself!

@Zack ****
which while interesting has not all that much to do with the requirements at Penang :/

I was just at the suvannakhet embassy, a guy got refused a tourist visa because his bank statement wasn't recent enough.

Then it must have changed in the last 20 days. Good to know!

If you go with a visa company you don't need a ticket.

I just did mine yesterday. You will need a ticket out. I just go to Skyscanner and buy the cheapest ticket anywhere, usually about 20 bucks, but you will need to show proof of payment, not just confirmation. I use the guy at Banana hotel, costs an extra 30 ringgit. You will need proof of accommodation in Thailand as well.

He starts at 8.15am. Best to get there about 8. Yesterday there was quite a few people.
John *******
He will take your passport and documents to the embassy. He will also advise you on what's required. You pick up your passport the next day, hopefully with your visa. Costs 30 ringgit

I look on Skyscanner, depends on the dates. Sometimes it's a bit more.
