How soon before my 90-day visa expires should I apply for an annual marriage visa extension in Thailand?

Jordee Wood asked in comments to unrelated topics:

I now understand that the re-entry permit fee is only paid when applying for it, usually after the annual visa is stamped.

So my choice of single- or multiple-entry before was just a preference—I can decide later.

When my 90 days expire, I will go back and tell them that I’ve changed my mind and want a multiple-entry permit.

I have another question: how many days before the 90-day temporary visa expires should I go back to immigration to get my annual marriage visa and decide on the re-entry permit?

I mean, can it be one or two weeks before?

Please make your own post next time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Jordee Wood inquired about the timeframe for applying for an annual marriage visa extension in Thailand before the expiration of their initial 90-day Non-O visa. The consensus in the comments is that the application for the one-year extension should be made within the last 30 days of the current 90-day visa. It's also clarified that decisions regarding a re-entry permit can be made either at the same time or later during the visa renewal process.

I think you're not having a grasp of how the process actually works to get the initial 90 day Non-O visa, then to get the year extension

it works like this

1 - You apply for the 90 day Non-O visa (in your case based on marriage)

2 - You pay the 2000baht fee, you get a receipt that says to come back in 14 days

***On that date you go back on that date and get the Non-O visa inked in and they give you a new 90 day stamp

THEN You wait until you have 30 days or less left on that stamp

3 - you go back to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension for 1900baht (with all new paperwork)

4 - you will get a 30 day under consideration stamp inked into your passport

***On that date you go back to get the year extension inked in (then you decide if you want to get a re-entry permit)

You have done Steps 1 & 2 and you are now waiting to go back to apply for the year extension (Step 3) when you'll get an under consideration stamp for 30 days and go back when that runs out to get the year inked in.

From your comment before, you are in the first 90 days from the initial in-country Non-O visa based on marriage. You will go to the local immigration office to apply for a 1-year extension for the same reason during your last 30 days of the current stamp, with the official fee of 1900 baht. The last day you can apply for a 1-year extension is the due date of the current stamp.

Since it's an extension based on being married to a Thai national, you will get an under-consideration period stamp for about 4 weeks (depending on the office). Then you go back again on the exact day of the under-consideration stamp to get the rest of the 1-year extension inked into your passport. No fee for this time.

You can apply for a single or multiple re-entry permit anytime, but a re-entry permit always has the same validity as your latest stay or extension stamp. If you apply for a re-entry permit during the under-consideration period for roughly one month, your re-entry permit will also be valid for about one month, etc.
