How long does visa cancellation take?

Our final ED visa extensionł runs out 5th of May. We're leaving the country on the 30th and our school just told us we need to cancel the ED visa before leaving.

So now we're worried about time, we only have three working days. Should we expect a similarly long wait like when extending an education visa or is it like getting a re-entry permit and quite quick? I trust we can get it done in a day?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process of canceling an Education (ED) visa extension in Thailand can typically be completed quickly, often in under 10 minutes, especially if you have the necessary letter from your school. However, it is crucial to complete this cancellation to avoid potential issues with immigration in the future, especially when applying for new visas. Failure to cancel an extension could result in fines or problems when seeking a new visa, even if you leave the country and return on another visa. It's recommended to handle the cancellation as soon as possible to mitigate any risks.

The fact that you don't cancel your ED extension isn't going to impact you at a thai consulate getting a visa because the consulates aren't run by the immigration dept.

IF you get out of the country (some people are denied entry at land borders without canceling the extension) you'll get a visa fine at a thai consulate BUT you can run into real problems when you go to the immigration office for a subsequent extension on the new visa when they see the old extension wasn't canceled. I have seen people on totally new visas be charged for overstay on the old extension because it wasn't canceled.

The procedure is you are required to go cancel a current extension when you are no longer going to stay in thailand on it. That's how it's spelled out in the rules, now whether people do or don't follow the rules is on them.

500 baht a day since the day you left thailand without having canceled your extension

500 Baht per day since I returned in new visa, or?

, I'd go cancel it (although be prepared to pay overstay at 500 baht a day up to 20K baht for not doing it before you left.

The good news is you can't be banned for being charged the overstay for failure to cancel an extension. (y)

Thanks Tod, that's what we will need to do in a few months time, another extension of stay on a new type of visa. Thanks for the clarification!

So what do you do if you have already left and returned without cancelling - should I go now and cancel????

Very easy in Chiang Mai, takes about 10 minutes, no lining up, as long as you have a letter from your school

The procedure when on an extension of stay based on education is to take paperwork from the school to the Immigration office and cancel your extension.

You get a paper from the school stating you are stopping studying on xx date. Immigrations will cancel your current extension and give you a stamp good until the date you're stopping studying.

See if the school will write the paper saying you're stopping on the day you leave the country.

Tod Daniels I went to school and got a letter to cancel my previous ed extension today, having left on 27th March and returned on 12th April on new visa...and then went into immigration today and they cancelled previous ed extension with no fines or problems...I’ve been out and back for 30 days and no 500 Baht per day fine.

Thank you for your advice, better to be safe than sorry 🙂

That doesn't mean you won't have problems in the future at the immigration office

If you're not coming back anytime soon just leave....

@Henri *****
that you have done it and had no repercussions good on you, BUT I know person after person who left on ED or B extensions thinking they'd cancel when they left only to have that person get charged for overstay (even though they were back in thailand on valid visas they'd gotten from a thai consulate) when they tried to extend their current visa.

You can cancel in advance, if you have the letter from the school.

We are coming back. First with a tourist visa which we'll convert to non-O visa and I have understood that not cancelling will cause problems with the non-O later on
