TLDR : Answer Summary
Australians can stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa upon arrival. This period can be extended for an additional 30 days at immigration for a fee of 1,900 baht, allowing for a total stay of up to 60 days. Travelers should be aware that entry and exit days count as full days, which may lead to confusion regarding the total time allowed. Also, it is possible to extend their stay further through border runs, but frequent usage of visa-exempt stamps may attract scrutiny from immigration officials.

30, then extension. Then a visa run to another country, and get 30 again.

So what is the cheapest flight to another country from Thailand?
Australian passport holders receive a free 30 day visa exempt stamp upon arriving in Thailand, you also have the option to get a 30 day extension at immigration for 1,900 baht. So basically 30 days for free and up to 60 if you wish for 1,900 baht.

Each entry gets 60 days total; 30 days on entry, 30 day extension an option.
You're allowed two land entries per year, no limit on air entries.
So the answer to the question of how long you can stay here is this: You can do it until you can't.
The more visa-exempt stamps & extensions you have, the greater the likelihood that an immigration officer will look at your history, question you as to whether you're actually a tourist, and potentially deny you entry.
When that cutoff point comes is a matter of luck. Some get questioned after 1 or 2 stamps, others get to stay here for up to or even over a year simply by border-bouncing.
30. But keep in mind that entry and exit count as full days, so counting exit minus entry date yields 29 instead. This occasionally catches people out. Australia itself counts the days differently.
some do not, Indonesia for instance. And Thailand was the first country to ever stamp my passport. Didn't bother looking at what exactly they stamped until my time was almost up. I left on day 28 so the validity was not at stake, no matter how you count.
while the Visa Exempt entry if free & no need to apply in advance for a Visa, that Extension isn't free though, it costs THB1900. You might be slightly better off to apply for a 60 day Tourist Visa at a slightly lower cost while still in your own country if you will want to stay longer than 30 days
is correct. A Visa Exempt entry is 30 days and is free. If one opts to stay another 30 days, that Extension costs THB1900 & therefore is not free & the cost works out a little more expensive than a 60 day Tourist Visa from my understanding
technically… he is wrong. As you still don’t require a visa for the extension. Not sure how that is complex to grasp. ‘How many days can Australians stay visa free.’ The answer is 60 days
If the poster wants a discussion about relative costs and option, your assessment is totally accurate.
yours is a good answer for sure. Some countries seem to have no problems getting the 60 day TV in home country, but others have issues with requirements and long delays. And cost may or may not be more than 1900 baht equivalent.
