TLDR : Answer Summary
The traveler is inquiring about the possibility of extending their stay in Thailand beyond the 30 days allowed on arrival with an Australian passport. Comments suggest that they can extend their visa by 30 days at an immigration office in Thailand for a fee, or they can apply for a single entry tourist visa before arriving, which grants a 60-day stay. It is also noted that proof of onward travel is necessary for boarding the flight to Thailand.

and I think at this point the o/p knows their options and can make their own decision on what path to take

Good luck to them (y)

you're not coming here until MARCH,

GO to the website I gave you for sydney, apply online, get approved, mail off your passport with a post paid return envelope and get it back in plenty of time before your trip it

Just apply for a 3mth Visa before you leave.I got one a few years ago and it cost $50.

The other issue you face is Proof of Onward Travel. At check-in for your flight, if you do not have a return or onward flight within the 30 days visa exempt OR a visa, you could be denied boarding.

It's your own decision which is convenient for you.

These are a couple of factors for others to consider visa-exempt entry and Single Entry Tourist visa to stay up to 60 days.

SETV:

- stamped in for 60 days when you enter Thailand

- The official application fee is equivalent to 1000 baht (by their own exchange rate table), mostly around 1200-1400 baht

- application must be done at the Thai embassy/consulate before you travel.

- depending on the country, you do it online/postal a few weeks in advance of your travel. or may spend a half day to 1 day to get it done at the Thai embassy

- many airlines wouldn't ask you for an onward travel ticket if you have a proper visa already. supposed to be less hassle with the airline to check-in

- extra: in case you want, you can apply for 30-day tourism extension makes your stay up to 90 days

Visa Exempt + 30-day tourism extension

- stamped in for 30 days when you enter Thailand

- The official extension application fee is fixed 1900 baht regardless of the length of an extension.

- application must be done at the local immigration office in person during your stay in Thailand. (some offices have a specifically short period for application for tourism extension)

- you may spend a half day to 1 day to get it done to go to and back to the local immigration office

- many airlines would ask you for an onward flight ticket leaving within 30 days if you don't have a proper visa (and many of them don't accept land travel tickets out of Thailand). might be more hassle with the airline to check-in.

You could get a tourist visa from the thai consulates in Oz (Canberra or Sydney) and that would get you stamped in for 60 days when you arrive.

Sydney does it all online, you apply, get approved, send your passport, documentation & a post paid envelope and they put the visa in and send it back to you.

OR

You could just show up and get stamped in free for 30 days on what's called a visa exempt entry, then extend that by 30 more days at the immigration office (NOT the airport) after you're here for 1900baht.

Honestly getting the single entry tourist visa from Sydney is the way to go as it's only 1400 (AU 60) to get the tourist visa where it's 1900baht to get the extension after you're here

This is the link for the single entry tourist visa from the Sydney thai consulate

you’re better off getting the visa in advance. it’s cheaper and that office is very crowded.
