TLDR : Answer Summary
The visa exemption for entering Thailand is free of charge. Australians can initially enter Thailand for 30 days, which can then be extended for an additional 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1,900 THB. To apply for the extension, travelers may need to show proof of onward travel within 30 days. Alternatively, it may be more convenient to obtain a tourist visa for a 60-day stay, which can be applied for online and does not require a passport to be sent away.

If you're planning on coming for 60 days then just purchase a tourist visa. Cost is less than extending your 30 days, you don't have to spend a morning at immigration and the flights you have booked will be fine. It's an e-visa now so you don't even have to send your passport away

ah, apparently Australia aren't on the e-visa list. Sorry. Contact your local consulate. Should take less than a week even if you have to send off.

there'll probably be a couple of strange questions on the application as they don't seem to have updated it since covid restrictions lifted. I think they're still asking for asq booking and proof of insurance over

0. Just attach a first nights accommodation booking and travel insurance confirmation and you should be fine

Visa exempt entry is free.

If you want to extend for 30 days it costs 1900โ‚ฟ at the immigration office when you apply.

You'll likely need to show some kind of travel out of Thailand within 30 days or your airline will not let you checkin. You can buy a cheap bus ticket out of Thailand that shows you'll be leaving within 30 days of arrival.

when i flew with Qatar wasn't asked to see my visa ,I know it's sods law ,if you haven't got a visa they will ask for it

exactly. Multiple stories of people having to buy an expensive ticket right there at the check-in counter or miss their flight. Not worth the risk.
