For all the grumbling about work permits and immigration thought I'd share how easy it is to get a Work Permit and visa extension processed on a Non-Imm B (BOI) in Chiang Mai.

Arrive in Chiang Mai Work Permit office at 8:57, have to take number (No. 1 :) ) called up at 9am, walk out with work permit at 9:15 am. Note - it's the new digital work permit, no book issued. The longest part was them booting up the computer to process it.

Drive to the literal other side of town. Arrive Promenada at 9:40. Room 3. Called up at 9:45, picture, told to wait, called up again 10 mins later, drive out of Promenada before 10 a.m. with a 2 year extension.

If your paperwork is all ok, dead easy and for all the TR and ED visa extensions I've had over the years, a refreshing change at that :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shares their positive experience about obtaining a work permit and a two-year visa extension on a Non-Immigrant B visa through the BOI in Chiang Mai, detailing the quick process at both the Work Permit office and Promenada. They mention the efficiency of the digital work permit system and express appreciation for the ease of the process compared to previous experiences with other visa types. Comments ask about requirements for independent contractors, costs involved, and clarify the extension duration.

Do you have to work for a company in Thailand or can you be an independent contractor?

of course I could be overly paranoid - but likewise paying tax and being legit has a pathway to permanent residency. And before someone chimes in and says it's impossible, it's not, it's just hard. Also I can, within confines through my employer, take on some local work legally and extra money always helps :)

It's a company similar to Iglu - I dont have permission to mention them (they're not well known) but I'll ask in the morning if they're ok with being promoted. Good people - I can't go into the terms but if I can, will share tomorrow. CM based. Also why I switched after so long on EDs and various TRs - personal opinion only is that the days of freelancing/working for overseas firms on anything other than a Non Imm B and work permit are coming to an end. Big Joke is no joke.

IF you don't mind meeting the BOI criteria for investing and doing business, it is a great option.

Technically 1 year, 10 months and 14 days. It's dated 2 years from the date I accepted the position. BOI Non-Imm B extensions are 2 years.
