Advice sought please !! Will re locate Thailand in Feb ! Am looking at transferring $$ from Australian bank to "Wise" to Thai bank !! As bank & wise apparently always use/send a " verification code" for transfer authentication I cannot get this as sent as SMS!! I would really appreciate a way around this without having to resort to a " VPN!?". Cheers

TLDR : Answer Summary
An individual relocating to Thailand is seeking advice on transferring money from an Australian bank to a Thai bank using Wise, particularly regarding the challenge of receiving verification codes via SMS. Community members offered various solutions, indicating that Wise sometimes allows verification codes to be sent through WhatsApp, email, or directly via their app settings. Others mentioned that after the initial setup, further verifications may not be needed, and some didn't require SMS codes at all. Tips also included using direct bank transfers with some banks that do not require authentication and utilizing WiFi calling settings to receive SMS while in Thailand.
I keep a cheap UK phone account active (6 pound a month on giff gaff) to do all my UK banking and transfers to Thailand via Wise. When I log in it says something like "this is your registered device so connecting automatically", never asked for authentication code!
For large amounts use your bank no charges. Rates usually much the same with NAB and ANZ the best.

I use Wise and find it good to transfer money to my Thailand account ( Bangkok Bank) I found this bank easy to open account. You can use Wise card in shops in Thailand also. I have also used TorFx to transfer money and found this company easy to deal with ( you can talk to an actual person in Australia š¦šŗ) Good luck, hope this helps, hope you enjoy Thailand as much as I do

I just use the feature where I approve any transactions using Wise and approve the notification.
it works for me with Wise, but one of my banks doesn't offer this.

Install the wise app in a phone. Then youāll not get SMS.
As for banks: no chance if they donāt already have some sort of security app. But you might try their app too.
And VPN: how does that help????
You receive SMS exactly the same with or without VPN which is for data over internet and not for GSM protocol (SMS and phone calls).
But from your questions I guess that you might also profit from another phone setting:
WiFi calling
If itās on (might take a day), then whenever your in WiFi you phone will replace the name of your provider (like AT&T) by something like āWiFi callingā). Your phone is then virtually relocated to your home country. So calls to home are cheap or free and calling Thailand is overseas.
When you login to the website or you do some transactions with their card (online or shops) they might send you SMS. But not if you have the app registered as 2FA device.
And VPN: yes. Has nothing to do with the question at all

Have transferred from Australian Bank account to my Thai bank account if this is what you are planning to do then no SMS code should be needed.
wise rates are better than most and their fee is low when compared with bank to bank direct and no fee is paid to Aussie or Thai bank only to wise itself.

When you open your account you will get an sms. Once your wise account is set up , you donāt need a code to transfer
They only ask for verification the first time for any recipient. After that itās fine. So, do it once while in Australia.

I never get any code from either my bank or Wise. Its probably your bank or a setting

I've found Wise is sticky with your phone.. Meaning once you've used it successfully with 1 phone, it doesn't matter if you change the sim, you will be able to log in without a code using the same phone.
I had wise in the Philippines, moved to Thailand and wise will works š.
That's just my current experience

Are you using a card to pay? I use direct bank transfer and have no codes to deal with.

You mean your OZ bank sends you a tan for a domestic transfer? I donāt know about wise in Australia but in Switzerland, I transfer to a Swiss branch of JP morgan chase doesnāt your au bank application just asks for approval? Sms is a bit outdated and not the most secure. If your bank did their job you donāt really need s VPN in my opinion

I've used wise for years and don't need to verify transfers with an sms code. If you go into 2-step verification settings you can set it up to verify using the app (actually the default setting). It even says that's more secure.
says Wise doesnāt use the verification method so all good

Commonwealth bank will send sms messages for various transactions usually new or larger transactions but they also send the same verification code to your Netbank so if you bank with them and you have Netbank youāll be ok.
Hi Lee, setting up a Thai bank account can be quite the process now but anyway if it gets too had you always have the option to use an agent, anyway you can transfer directly from an Australian bank to your Thai bank although the exchange rate isnāt always that good or you can set up Wise which a lot of expats seem to favour, suggest either way send a token $10 to ensure the transfer happens the way way it should. Something to keep in mind is some Aussie banks limit transfers eg mine is limited to $30k AUD per transaction, also using wise transactions under 50,000 Baht is immediate, any amount greater will usually take 24 hours. Also your 800,000 Baht will need to mature in your Thai bank account for two months before immigration will recognise it. Good luck mate, it is worth it in the end š
