TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation provides insights into how expatriates in Thailand manage their UK bank accounts, particularly regarding receiving verification codes. Users share methods for ensuring access to their accounts, such as maintaining a UK mobile number for OTP (one-time password) verification, using money transfer services like Wise to facilitate transactions, and the importance of keeping their accounts active despite living abroad. They suggest using virtual services to maintain a UK number, avoiding the need for frequent top-ups on SIM cards, and discussing the experiences with banks regarding the residency of account holders.

If you have a Uk mobile number that you want to keep 'live' after moving to Thailand.. and want to avoid periodic top-ups on a PAYG sim.. or contract fees for a tariff you cannot use abroad.. then consider moving your number to expatfone.. which gives you a virtual Uk mobile that is accessible via an app.. so it can be used on any handset or tablet etc.. and you get free calls to Uk landlines and mobiles (from Thailand) without ever having to disclose you are out of country.. very useful if you need to call your Uk bank or they need to call you.. and you can send and receive sms messages as well.. so solves your bank verification sms concerns.. there is a monthly fee (works out at about £2 weekly) but it's much cheaper than any alternative i could find.. and if you return to the Uk to live.. you also have the option of porting your number out to another service provider.. so you don't lose your number.. for me it was a no-brainer really!
Are who still in business.. do you mean Expatfone.. as mentioned, I'm a current subscriber.. meaning i use the service myself.. and I'm not aware of any issues 🤔
ok when I transfer money from my UK bank to wise the bank will send a text to verify it's me taking money out but il have a Thai sim in phone if I tell bank I live Thailand they may close account down

Sorry for the spelling errors. Hope you can understand.
yep do the same use ID plan think £6 a month that’s change able plan monthly so can use it on unlimited data in uk if needed to hotspot laptops etc think they have e sims now not sure how they work 😜
you are correct. My account was closed when they found out that I lived in Thailand most of the year. I have another account now and use my debit card to transfer and no code isneeded. But, I have a dual som phone and pay for my uk service with Talkmobile but only switch it on when I need to re everything a text from uk onthat number. The others Lothar my Thai sim with AIS. I turned that off when in the uk. It means you have an active phone whenever you touch down in either country. If you are in Thailand you might be able to get a simcard from uk by post but not sure on that.
If I keep my US phone provider account can I just swap sim cards then make the wise transaction then swap back?

I’m in Tha Muang for a visit and swapped my thai sim card to us sim card and sent money via wise to friends bank account as a test. It worked. Wise accepted two factor authentication from phone with us sim card.
The problem is connecting a new Uk sim to the network to establish it as a 'live' number.. i think you would need to do this when you are still in the Uk.. ie. before travelling overseas.. i could be wrong but i believe trying to connect via a local network here using roaming is unlikely to work for new sim registrations.
I guess you could get a friend or relative living in the Uk to activate a new Uk sim card for you using their phone.. then mail it to you in Thailand.. but if you already have an active Uk sim then a virtual mobile phone is a good solution 👍
