TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual plans to transfer $30k to a Thai bank account using Wise and seeks advice regarding potential issues. Community members highlighted that while transfers using Wise can be simple, there are some important considerations: transfers over 50,000 baht should go to specific banks (like Bangkok Bank or SCB), they can take 4 days to clear, and using a proper transfer reason is crucial. Suggestions included potentially using Chase for SWIFT transfers due to lower fees, as Wise transfers can sometimes incur delays or issues. Participants also noted the importance of correct account setup and compliance with regulations, especially concerning large transactions which may raise flags with financial institutions. Lastly, some mentioned the use of agents for opening bank accounts under certain visa conditions.

Getting a bank account

Don’t expect to get something for nothing. Each office is an independent business. Each office makes their own criteria.

You certainly will pay a fee for transferring USD from USA to Thailand. The amount depends on the bank and the transfer service.

Banking is an essential service if you plan to spend time here. It’s not FREE.

I prepared ahead of time by getting a bank account set up 6 months ago.

I treated this as an important business transaction, not just a casual activity.

My Thai friend made an appointment for me at the Bangkok Bank branch across from Astra in CM. He also translated for me.

I am a middle aged physician and dressed as such. Yes I did do the whole business card ceremony.

I told the banker that I plan to retire soon and buy a condominium at Astra.

I was asked to purchase a life insurance policy for about $100. Presumably the banker gets a commission. Whatever, it’s the price of doing business at the bank.

They wanted to copy my passport and see my credit card from Wells Fargo. I think I showed them how much was in my account also to make the point that I’m a serious customer.

I also showed them $500 in perfect $100 bills that was to be the initial deposit.

Nothing else was required.

Act like a serious customer and you will be treated as such.

Present yourself properly and you should be fine.

If not, thank them for their time and visit another office.

Best wishes on your adventure to Thailand!

I assume you're doing the "copy and paste" with this comment every time someone asks about opening a bank account, it's out dated information, the rules and regulations have recently changed regarding opening a bank account, if you don't already have a long term visa you will be refused by most or all the banks you visit, you will likely need the assistance of an agent if you're on a short term visa.
Allen ********
What’s the best way to find an agent? We’re working with an immigration lawyer, and I assume that’s different.
Andy **********
@Allen *******
visa agents, there are lots of them in the tourist areas, Pattaya is probably the best place to get everything sorted.
Allen ********
@Andy *********
Exactly! They have changed. I’m back in the states waiting for document authentication because I couldn’t open a bank account until our US marriage certificate was authenticated by state, federal and US Thai embassy.

I am well dressed, properly funded, and my wife is Thai / American (dual citizenship) and a business owner. None of that mattered in our case.

A friend of ours made it through last fall, but the new policy has me getting more documentation before I can even open the account for proper O-Visa funding.

We have a lawyer guiding us through the process, and we went all over BKK trying to find a workaround.

I’ll be back in late May I guess. 😕

@Allen *******
just use the services of an agent, they can open a bank account for you, I did it recently on a tourist visa, i also converted my home country driving licences, along with an IDP into full car and motorcycle licenses.

I was told a lot of the rules and regulations changed sometime around march 2023, making it very difficult or impossible to open an account on a short term visa, it's a catch 22 situation, because most people enter Thailand on say a tourist visa, and then want to open a bank account to make a deposit to meet the financial requirement, for acquiring a long term visa, but now the banks are saying you can only open an account on a long term visa, that's why now most people are just using the services of an agent.

I was able to get an account with Bangkok Bank two years ago.

Since then I have been able to transfer money from my Chase account to BB NY branch as a domestic transaction costing $35. It is easy to do and posts to the Thai BB account within 24 hours automatically. The transaction registers as a foreign transaction.

The exchange rate is about 2 baht less than the best posted rate.

It is not the cheapest way to make large international transactions but it certainly has been convenient!
Terary **********
I did that a couple of times in the past six months. No problems. There can always be delays as much as two weeks but it's unusual.

Wise sucks!

Use RIA
Phubodee ***********
Which agency did u used? My fam needs one
Graham ******
@Phubodee **********
If you cannot open an account go to Bangkok Bank and pay for the insurance, at least you get something extra for your money
Phubodee ***********
@Graham *****
Ok but what do you mean by somethings extra? Bank account?
Graham ******
@Phubodee **********
No, insurance should you ever need it

When I visit Thailand (no visa), I just use my Revolut card. I keep it topped up via my funds outside of Thailand, exchange “as and when” and draw from an ATM. I have the added bonus of topping up via Apple Pay which is linked to my credit card which in turn provides a lot of air miles! And there are no bank charges for international transactions… Not sure this would work for those retirees there (I might find out one day!) but it avoids a lot of hassle for me at least.
Stuart ***********
@Gary ******
i think that is a good method, I do something similar with a Starling bank card and use it to pay for things anywhere that will accept a card. I am retired here, so I need a Thai bank account to deposit money (for the visa) and use that for cash.
Michael ********
@Gary ******
I live here on a retirement Visa

I was told thar your transfer is best done direct from your home bank account into your Bangkok Bank account if donr though Wise it does not show on the account with the correct international transfer prefix.
Stuart ***********
@Michael *******
you were told incorrectly. There's a lot of wrong information given by people. I used Wise for my bank transfers to Bkk bank and my non o retirement visa and subsequent yearly extensions were approved with no problems.
Michael ********
@Stuart **********
OK, I accept that, but what do Wise charge to transfer 2K every month ?
Peter ****************
@Michael *******
2.000£ > 12,08£.

2.000 US$ > 16,40$
Nick ************
@Michael *******
I assume you mean £2000. I transfer £1500 each month and the charge is £15. You can check the Wise rates without logging in. The exchange rate is good too. This month Western Union were cheaper by 200 baht but you can't gaurantee ftt. Swift transfers gave me an awful exchange rate as I suspect your bank does too.
Michael ********
@Nick ***********
I will stick with the way I do it and get the FTT prefix on the transfer the way I was advised originally by immigration.
Nick ************
@Michael *******
no problem
Stuart ***********
@Michael *******
not sure, I tend to transfer larger sums less frequently, but someone on here will tell you.

I'm not saying it's a cheaper option than your method, simply that it works.
Michael ********
@Stuart **********
OK I obviously was told wrong.
Nick ************
@Michael *******
it does if you get your account tagged and use long term stay in Thailand as the reason for transfer.
Michael ********
@Nick ***********
I wS told different, but anyway I do a Chaps International transfer direct from my bank each month and it costs a standard charge of £20 and for the amount I transfer it is much cheaper than any transfer company, on my bank book I get the correct prefix FTT.

Please, someone enlighten me, we have been here since January and we are here until June. I keep seeing post about people opening bank account? Do we have to or can we just continue to use our bank card from USA? What is the difference?
Ruth *******
@Linda ***************
most people get bank accounts due to visa requirements. However, they are convenient for easy payments without carrying cash. Sadly, they’re not convenient to obtain…certainly not on a tourist visa.
Christopher *************
@Linda ***************
You can just continue using your Bank card. A Thailand bank account is really only of any use if you come here on a regular basis.
Linda ****************
@Christopher ************
thank you for the info🙏🏼

I only got one due to Visa requirements

Chase banks would do brother!

If you transfer $10,000.00 or more on any given day you will be shining a big spotlight on yourself as a possible drug dealer. The bank/Wise or any other financial institution are required to report such transfers to the US government promptly.

If you transfer $9,000 or less on any given day, your transaction will go unnoticed by all. Recommend transferring $9k every week.

I made the mistake of going over $10k. I’ll never do that again. Since then, I’m flagged by TSA for extra scrutiny.
Brook ********
@John ********
Structuring your deposits like that to avoid reporting is actually a federal crime.

“Structuring is the breaking up of transactions for the purpose of evading the Bank Secrecy Act reporting and recordkeeping requirements and, if appropriate thresholds are met, should be reported as a suspicious transaction under 31 C.F.R. § 103.18.”

 set up a business account on Wise and you can send large amounts
Peter ****************
Samuel, and don't forget to register Wise full ! So with copy pasport and photo of y'r face, holding y'r pasport near y'r face. Otherwise bigger amounts most of the time getting refused and you first have to register full anyway.
John ******************
36 years now with Bangkok Bank and never one failure.
Stuart ***********
If you use Wise don't forget to use the correct reason, which is something like "long term stay in Thailand" (someone will correct me with the correct wording), it was the last one on the list when I used it a while ago.
Kool *******
You've got a Chase account. They should have very cheap SWIFT transfer fees. With that much it is better to use a SWIFT transfers so there is no question of exactly where the money came from, especially if you want to take it out of Thailand in the future.
Mac *********
@Kool ******
I got hammered with chase fees 12 months ago. Check before pressing send.
Robert ********
@Mac ********
how I pay 5 dollars to transfer thew chase and there is a 200 baht on the thai side up to 25,000k
Mac *********
The exchange rate, I believe! I was 10,000 THB less through Chase than Western Union the first time. Schwab was a bit better. I tried four different services to test out the result. Wise was the fourth one and came 2nd on that occasion.

FYI: I have all my money with Chase. and would prefer to use them.
Eric ***************
Over 50,000 baht takes 4 days to clear
Marc *********
@Eric **************
with Wise mine take 24 hrs for over 49k bht ,2m bht was 3 days the first time then next day each time after that. UK registered account tho.
Robert ************
It's simple.

But here's the thing with Wise to Bangkok Bank at least.

Any transfer under about
*****
baht shows up as Transfer from Other Bank. Only bigger transfers say International Transfer...
Peter ****************
Andy *********
@Robert ***********
incorrect - I send 45k every month - shows up as ftt
Steve **********
@Andy ********
have 80k sent per month ( to cover exchange fluctuation ) always entered on BKB book as FTT.
Peter ****************
@Robert ***********
Nope. You have to choose "Funds for long stay in Thailand". Then it shows international transfer. By the way, Bangkok bank is one of the few which shows that already. Other banks you many times find a code in the back of y'r bankbook.
Steve **********
@Peter ***************
bkb shows all funds from US onto your bkb acct as FTT indicating Foreign origin
Peter ****************
@Steve *********
yep, but with the choice "Funds for long stay...." on BKB overview, it already says international immediately.
Graham ******
@Peter ***************
No, you select the last option in this drop down menu
Ruth *******
@Graham *****
that’s odd that that should be required.
Robert ************
@Peter ***************
Thanks again. Had never noticed that choice. Just tried it.
Robert ************
@Peter ***************
Aha. Thank you.

Since you have a new Wise account there may be some delays. Also make sure you get either a Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn or SCB account as those are the only banks that can receive transfers over 50,000 baht from Wise.
