Have you used one place does does it all? Translate then legalise?

Thank you.

UPDATE

I settled with University of Language Chiang Mai to translate and post over which was 2000 baht for translation which will take 5 business days and 50 baht for postage.

Has anyone replying lost a passport?

I’ve lost mine, currently waiting for a new one. Need to leave and come back soon.

Would a picture of my old passport be sufficient ?

For the sake of clarity, DTV holders do not have a visa stamped or stuck into their passports.

The visa is the document sent with the DTV approval email from the Thai Embassy, which has to be printed out and presented with the passport to the IO upon each entry.

The IO will stamp into the passport an entry stamp allowing 180 day stay in Thailand. This is not a visa.

There is no need to get this entry stamp ‘transferred’ to a new passport. Upon exit from Thailand, simply hand in both old and new passports to the IO and they will stamp out in the new passport. Upon entry back into Thailand simply hand in both old and new passports, and the 180 day stamp with be stamped into the new passport. Job done.

It’s very important to check when getting the 180 stamp that the IO has actually stamped in with 180 days, not visa exempt stamp.

It’s much easier to get the same IO to correct the stamp if it’s wrong, than to sort it out later on.

Not true lol. I think that some workers dont know what they are talking about. Im on a dtv visa and flew in with a new emergency passport to don mueang. They scanned my finger prints and used facial recognition..... literally in less then 5 minutes they stamped me in with no questions I didnt have to show my other passport I didnt even tell them im on a dtv visa because once they scanned my finger prints it already identified my visa. The DTV is linked to your finger print and facial recognition digitally in their database. As long as your passport is valid ..... the passport number doesnt matter cause thats not how they track u. Book your ticket dont re-apply that worker doesnt know what they're talking about.

There is NOTHING that can get transferred. The DTV visa itself is a .pdf document separate from the passport. Upon entry into Thailand, you show that document and your old passport, and you will receive an entry stamp into the new passport

The question is not stupid, and since OP does not have the old passport anymore, their answer is completely correct.

OP might have luck with just a copy of the old passport, but officially a copy is just not the same as the original, so I think the embassy could not give the advice to enter wit new passport and copy of old passport.

NO! I got a new passport last year because it expired this Sept, and I wasn't coming back to the US anytime soon, they just told me to travel with both passports and I have come in and out of Thailand with my new and old passport at least 5xs now. So NO you do Not have to pay for a new DTV, that is not true, also this was a question that came up a few months ago and others have done the same, travel with them both, when you arrive in Thailand they are aware if this issue at immigration.🤷🏾‍♀️

As long as you have the old passport travelling with both is the easiest solution.

When you don't have the old one anymore the instructions of the embassy are correct.

Luit *****************

The visa is connected to the old passport with the number, but they don't transfer.

Normally you should travel with old and new passport.
911l****
911l****
@Luit ****************
The visa is in the system after the first entry and linked to the biometric data. Old passports are often cancelled or lost. In general it’s good to have both passports at all times but it’s not a condition of entry. For the same reason traveling on the new passport doesn’t help conceal your previous travel history.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@911l****
When you look strictly at conditions of entry for the visa to be valid it has to be in combination with the passport that is mentioned on it. Nothing more, nothing less.

The fact IO can see somewhere you had that passport in the past might be sufficient for IO to not further check the visa, but it is not a guarantee as long as there is no official remark that the new one replaces the old one.

All these comments about 'you'll be fine, everyone does it, trust me I know' are missing the point, I think.

It's the OP's local embassy in Los Angeles giving him these instructions. He must take them seriously.

How far do you think he will get if he goes there and says, 'look at all my Facebook buddies telling me I don't have to do what you tell me. Now give me my same DTV visa in the new passport.'?

Rejected.

Unless he maybe appeals before the application and gets a higher up to approve it?

Either way, good luck.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 625 The instructions of the embassy in LA are correct, the only way to get a visa directly connected to a new passport is to get the old one void and apply for a new one, or transferred by embassy which they normally refuse to do.

So when you ask how do I get my visa to the new passport, they gave the only correct answer.

But it is not necessary to get the visa to the new passport if you still have the old one.

The old passport has become invalid, but all the visa in it or connected to it are still valid, and in any country that will be accepted as long as you can also show the old passport.

So at entry the old passport is needed as ID in combination with the visa and the new passport is needed as travel document and will get the stamps of stay in it.

We are dealing with 2 departments here. One is the embassy which operates under MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) who approved the visa and the other is the Immigration Department who enforces the visa. So if your visa is already approved, it should be up to the Immigration department to enforce it with the new and old passport.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
The visa stays connected to the old passport for the complete valid period, MFA does not want to change that and Immigration cannot change that.

What can be done by Immigration or by passport issuer is a reference in the new passport that connects it to the old passport and then there is an indirect connection between visa and new passport.
Dave ***********
Dave ***********
I’m sure this is totally incorrect. The visa is not in your old passport, only the 180 stamp. So you enter Thailand and hand in both old and new passports to the immigration officer so that they can see the last 180 stamp in your old passport. They will them stamp your 180 day stamp into your new passport, job done.

I suggest that you had very bad advice from whoever you spoke to in the Thai Consulate on Los Angeles.

If you still have your old passport, you will be fine. You are also linked by biometrics in the Thai immigration system, so they will know that the old passport belonged to you, and your visa.

Getting a new passport from time to time is normal procedure, and does not affect any valid visa you my have
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Dave **********
You need the old passport not because of an eventual 180 day stamp in it, but because the visa contains the old passport number, so the visa is only valid with the old passport.

New passport will be stamped.

When there is somehow an official link between old and new passport, you might not need the old passport anymore.

Luit *****************
Luit *****************
Your old passport is not valid anymore as a travel document, but the visa in or connected to it as still valid together with it, so as long as you also bring your old passport you do not need a new visa.

When old passport number is mentioned in new passport you might be able to enter with visa and new passport only.

Passport issuing authority or Immigration can put such a reference in your new passport.
Chris *********

No. Thats not how that works. You just have to bring both passports with you. Thats why if you are unsure of something, you should reach out to this group. Being intelligent isnt knowing all the answers. Its knowing how to find them.
Greg ***********

The consulate seemingly has no clue how Immigration works. Your DTV remains valid, it is a .pdf document, which you should print out and keep in a laminated form. Before entering Thailand, you input the DTV visa number into the TDAC online form, and you just travel with both passports and the laminated pdf. You show both passports and the visa pdf, and the entry stamp will go correctly into your new passport. You can get your personal data updated in the Immigration Computer system, they will be able to link your new passport number to the visa.
Jazi ********
Jazi ********
Maybe the LA consulate are confused. But you just fly in with your current and old passport. Immigration will let you in. Maybe after a little confusion and calling in a supervisor.

Then you go to the local immigration office and they can transfer the visa and all stamps to the new passport.

Only issue is. Local immigration office might want a letter from your embassy that this new passport is yours is the continuation of the old one. Paperwork

they do "transfer" the visa in fact.

@Jazi *******
They can make a reference to the old passport with visa in the new passport and then not asking for the old passport anymore, but the visa is still only connected to the old passport, you will not get a PDF with the new number on it, and from MFA/embassy point of view, yout visa is still connected to the old passport.

you have been told total BS by the consulate. The visa itself is a .pdf document which you should print and always keep with you, to show on entry. The visa cannot get transferred at all, unless you were among the very first applicants and received a sticker into your old passport. In this case you just travel with both passports, your visa remains valid, and the entry stamp goes into the new passport
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Andreas ********
The information that they don't transfer the visa is correct, but they should have told you can still use the visa with the old passport when you still have this. Old passport to keep visa valid, new passport to uae as valid travel document.
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
@Luit ****************
well I fogot to write, if the DTV is a .pdf document, you need to keep the old passport anyways, because the visa is linked to the old passport number. So when re-entering Thailand, you are required to show the printed visa document, the old passport and the new passport. Immigration has the means to update the information in their computer, in case they do, they link the new passport number to the DTV, and you won't need to show the old passport anymore
Andreas *********
Andreas *********

two of my friends have a DTV issued in August 2024 in Phnom Penh. The visa is a sticker in the passport. They both have new passports now, and every time the re-enter Thailand, they show both the old and the new passport. No problems so far since 6 re-entries
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Andreas ********
Correct, and for some reason most countries don't want to transfer their visa from one passport to another passport, maybe security reasons to keep a visa always connected to only one passport.
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
@Luit ****************
Most probably there is no visa sticker in his old passport. He just has an e-visa printout. There is nothing that could get transferred. An entry stamp is not a visa.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
Exactly, visa stays physically in old passport or is with passport number in evisa connected to the old passport.

MFA does not want to transfer it, so they only offer to make old one void and let you apply for a new one when you ask.

But the visa just stays valid in combination with the old passport.

Immigration can put a remark in your new passport that links to the visa in the old passport.

Passport issuer can sometimes also put a remark in the new passport that links to the old passport and in that way connects to the visa.

Carrying old and new passport is always a good solution.

When you apply for a new passport, try to keep the old one and when possible let them make a remark in the new one linking to the old one.

your first mistake was contacting the Embassy about a visa they already sold you

You don't need to do any of what you were told

You exit the country with BOTH passports, they will stamp you out on the new one and make a note in it you entered on the old one. Then when you come back in (the first time on the new passport) you present BOTH passports and the PDF print out to the officer at passport control. They will stamp you in on the new one and from then on you only need it and the PDF to get in and out of the country (but I'd make a copy of the data page of the old passport <- the one the DTV was issued on)

Many MANY people have gotten new passports and continue to use their existing DTV that they got on the old passport number.
