Hi folks,

Would appreciated a little help.

Me and the good lady have just arrived in Chiang Mai from the Uk on a 60 day e-visa which we are hoping to extend for another 30 days. While here the both of us would like to apply for our retirement Visa.

Looking for someone who’s completed the process and can help us out. Cheers.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking guidance on extending their 60-day e-visa for an additional 30 days and transitioning to a retirement visa while in Chiang Mai. They are looking for personal experiences and advice on the procedure. Comments provide detailed steps on the extension process, including timing and costs, as well as requirements for applying for a NON-O visa and maintaining funds in a Thai bank account for the retirement extension.

the 30 day extension can be gotten when you have 45 days or less left on your 60 day entry stamp. It costs 1900baht They'll add the time to your current stamp so you don't lose any time going early

As far as converting the tourist visa entries to first 90 day Non-O visas and then year long extensions of stays

You'll have to get bank accounts open, get 800K baht transferred in to them from abroad and then go apply for the 90 day non-O visa at the immigration office for 2000baht

You need to do that when you have a minimum of 21 days left on your current entry stamp or extension from it.

It'll go under review for 20 days then you go back to get the Non-O visa and a new 90 day stamped inked in.

THEN you wait until the funds have been in the account for 2 months and go back and apply for the year extensions based on retirement for 1900baht.

They will be issued on the spot.

And that's pretty much how you do it

thanks Tod, that’s great info, will have a look into opening a bank account asap. What’s the banks like over here, are they pretty much the same or are some better than others for opening accounts.

I have just gone through this process in Hua Hin and the advice provided by Tod and Ellie is excellent as always. If you are leasing a condo my understanding is that it needs to be for at least 6 months and the visa process is easier if you lease from a Thai person. I leased for 1 year with a Thai man and all the documents I needed for immigration were included in my contract. You also need to hand draw the location of the condo/house (immigration were not interested in a Google map). The bank account opening can be frustrating and difficult, I tried several banks before being successful at a branch of Bangkok Bank away from the tourist area. Good luck.

If you don't have a residency certificate getting a bank account can be very difficult. It could also be very easy as some branches (note, branches not banks) will allow foreigners on tourist visas to open an account. It comes down to persistence trying all in your locality and some in tourist areas may be easier than up country.

@Graham *****
thanks for that, we’ve just started looking for a condo so hopefully that should give us a residency certificate. And as you say finding a branch that will let us open an account.

, residence certificate is an official document, private property cannot provide. You may need to contact your embassy in Thailand if they issue one for you.

Unfortunately, detail about the residence certificate and opening a bank account is out of the scope of this group. Please try expats groups in your local area.

's instructions, You need to get the latest requirements list from the Chiang Mai immigration office for each step.

All below is general information, NOT the Chiang Mai version.

(1st step). You can check with this as a reference for your in-country Non-O visa based on being over 50/retirement
