Hello friends, I have a good one for you. Just got my first retirement visa extension based off of my non-imm type "O" visa. Chiang Mai immigration was awesome, helpful and professional in every way. So I am marrying a Thai national and we are going to accept a 1 year English teaching position in Hungary starting at the end of August. It is my understanding that I can get a reentry permit and not have to do 90 day reporting while out of the country, but would still need to maintain appropriate bank balances at the required time frames and be back for the next annual extension. What I want to do in transfer to a marriage visa to reduce the required bank balance from 800.000 baht (at required time frames) to a maximum of 400,000 baht if I understand everything correctly. My first question is what do you think of my plan and the second question has to do with timing and procedure. Thank you all very much. This is one of the best groups I have ever been in...really helpful and pleasant. I appreciate your help and advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their experience of obtaining a retirement visa extension in Thailand and plans to marry a Thai national while taking a teaching position in Hungary. They seek advice on the feasibility of switching to a marriage visa, which would lower their required bank balance, and clarification on how re-entry permits and 90-day reporting work when leaving the country. A commenter explains that a re-entry permit does not affect 90-day reporting requirements but is necessary for maintaining visa status when leaving and returning to Thailand.

You need to understand that a re-entry permit has NOTHING to do with 90 day reporting.

The way the 90 day reporting system works is IF you're in the country on the 90th day you report, if you're not you don't.

What a re-entry permit does is let you leave the country and keeps the current extension stamp you're on "alive" so when you return you're stamped in until that same expiration date.

IF you're not wanting to get another yearly extension based on being over 50 (retirement) where you WOULD have to keep the 800K baht in the bank for 3 months after your extension was granted and then 400K baht in the bank for the rest of the year, don't worry about it.

Next year when you go to apply for your new yearly extension you would just change the reason to one based on marriage and that only requires you have the 400k baht in the account 2 months before you apply for the extension.

the 90 day count down clock resets when you come back into the country and your next 90 day report is due 89 days from the date you stamped into the country (they count the day you arrive as day one).

I have a question. I will also be out of the country when my next 90 day report is due. Does the 90 day reporting date begin again from the day I reenter Thailand? Thank you.
